Two Hams on the Road

Great Food, Great Folks, and Great Swimming

We escaped the summer heat in Virginia Beach with a trip around Michigan on the way to the rally. After a couple of nights in Virginia and Ohio, we stopped to visit The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn. It was fantastic, and we found good local sweet corn. Heading north from there we found a really nice township park at the southern end of Saginaw Bay (Finn Road Township Park), and found more local sweet corn, muskmelon and good sausage from Frankenmuth. We spent a few days near Mackinaw City. Molly enjoyed the ride to Harbor Springs where she finally got to swim, then we drove the tunnel of trees and ate at Legs Inn polish restaurant. We also visited the Icebreaker Mackinaw and a lighthouse which happened to have a good doggie swim spot. We ventured across the bridge for a week at Lakeshore RV just outside of St Ignace. Molly really liked the campground, since she could swim in Lake Michigan just across the street. From there we got some great smoked fish, really good blueberries, and tried our first pastie. We had a great fish dinner at the VFW on Friday night. We rode up to the Soo Locks, and spent a day on Mackinac Island. The ferry ride to the island took us under the bridge, which had the usual cloud/fogs on the top. Molly enjoyed the ferry ride and the carriage tour, and we enjoyed the fudge and the history.

Starting south we stayed at Traverse Bay RV Resort just outside Traverse City. We enjoyed the hot tub, and visiting with the other folks staying here. It was a good location to drive the Mission Peninsula and visit a couple of wineries and the lighthouse, then drive the Leelanau Peninsula. We had a beautiful day for the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We got some really good prune plums, peaches, cherries, and more tomatoes, sweet corn, and squash. We also ate some cherry pie and bought cherry preserves and more fudge before heading south. We spent a couple of nights in Muskegon. Molly had a good time, as there was another Golden to play with in the campground and she really enjoyed the dog beach. We toured the LST ship that landed at Normandy and a WW II submarine.

Finally, we got to Elkhart ready for the rally. After driving around town for an hour, we found the boat launch across the street, so Molly got to swim. As many folks on this forum already know, the rally was great! There were so many interesting people to talk to and so much really good food. The factory tour was great, the seminars very interesting, and it was fun to listen to the Grand Design owners. We did visit the RV museum and got some Amish cheese and baked goods. It was sad to leave, but we did travel along with another Reflection also taking back roads on the way south.

We stopped on the way home to visit family who live on the Chesapeake Bay about 50 miles east of DC. The closest decent place to stay was in College Park, and we managed to get into traffic (not towing) on a Saturday home Maryland football game. We were lucky heading south Monday mid morning, as the traffic around DC wasn't too bad.

It was a great trip, and we are looking forward to many more adventures in our Reflection.

Nice Recap!! We have relatives who live in St. Ignace - they always tell us "we live where you like to vacation". Michigan has a lot of scenic places. Can't wait for retirement so we can visit other states in detail like that.
