Two Hams on the Road

Florida

We were fortunate to have a break from all the snow and cold that coincided with a gap in the home basketball schedule, so we gave away our remaining season tickets and headed toward Florida on Feb 7, 2014. We stayed in Dillon SC and Brunswick GA on the way down, then spent 3 nights in Ocala before heading to Sun-N-Fun in Sarasota. We had a site that was very convenient to the hot tubs and not too far a walk from the dog park, which is good since this is a huge campground. We chatted with folks we met during our visit last year, and Molly sniffed some of the dogs who were also there last year. We also met with folks from the ham radio group, and Dave did make use of the ham radio station several days. We seemed to visit the nearby Amish market every 2 or 3 days, and really enjoyed the fresh local strawberries, tomatoes, and summer squash, as well as the great weather. Molly went swimming at the beautiful Brohard Park Dog Beach in Venice four times. Three weeks went by very quickly, and our camper just got more comfortable. Molly also started to feel at home, especially since it took her swimming in February.

From Sarasota, we drove across FL 70 past orange groves and cattle ranches (interesting) then on to stay at Wickham Park in Melbourne for a week to visit some family. We had a nice site and Molly enjoyed the huge dog park. From Melbourne we stayed near Savannah and outside Fayetteville NC. We saw the first other Grand Design (a Solitude) at the Fayetteville RV Resort; it appeared to be someone military staying full time but we didn't meet the owners.

We learned that you should try the stove on your maiden voyage. The first or second time we used it, we had a huge flame on the high output burner. Dave fixed it, but it flared again. He then refixed it (the tube wasn't long enough), and we are fine now. This trip we also realized the intermittent power problem was not us, but the campground.

The time went by very quickly, and the Reflection was very comfy. It was so sad to come home, winterize, and endure more cold weather. Need to plan more camping trips!!!!
