We measured everything, and all voltages rang out ok. What we wound up having to do was bus the 3 wire ground to the 4 wire neutral on the 110vac side of the adapter cable. The EMS didn't like like the floating neutral. Once we tied the neutral and ground together, the EMS displayed everything just fine, and we had appropriate voltages on the EMS output. We then hooked it up to the coach, and all is good.
Caution: this worked for our application. YMMV!

The source dryer connection is 3 wires (Hot 1, Hot 2, and neutral). On the 4 wire RV end, there's Hot 1, Hot 2, neutral, and ground. Hot 1 goes to Hot 1, Hot 2 goes to Hot 2, and the 3 wire neutral goes to both the 4 wire neutral and ground.
Use a voltmeter to confirm what you have before making the connection. I'd not have done this if I didn't have the EMS.

I dont think the source 3 wire is hot, hot, and neutral. It is hot, hot, and ground. The newer dryer plug will have a 4 wire setup....hot, hot, neutral, and ground. The bottom line is that if you have only three wire coming to the original dryer plug, it CANNOT be used safely in order to do what you just did. The only answer is to rewire that circuit and using the correct ga. wire, have 4 conductors coming from the breaker panel....hot, hot, neutral, and ground. Any ground neutral bonding is already done in the breaker panel itself. Any neutral/ground bonding done downstream, if you will, of the breaker panel is a violation of the NEC, as I stated above and is dangerous to use. It sets itself up for the ground being a current carrying conductor and you run the extreme risk of electrical shock.....Don't do it....to be safe.
The ground conductor should NEVER be carrying any electrical current. The only exception to this is during an electrical fault situation......and this is never a good thing.Last edited by xrated; 03-30-2021 at 10:02 AM.
