About 15 years ago we bought an enclosed snowmobile trailer off Craigs List, price was $5000. We agreed on price and told the guy we would come with a cashiers check. He said nope, cashiers checks can be fraudulent. He said cash only, if you can get a cashiers check you can get cash.

So back then already cashiers checks were a possible issue.

What they want is for you to deposit the check. When they get the cancelled check back, they have the bank's routing number and your account number. They can do a lot with that...

What if you go to a cheque cashing place. I’m sure they take a percent, but then the “scammers” wouldn’t have any of your info.

At some point it will go to your bank and return to the originator. The check cashing place will cash it for you, but send it to your bank for the money. Once your bank fulfills it, the check is returned to the originator.

This is very common scam. Last camper I sold I had several contact me saying they were going to send someone to pick up camper and bring me a check or cashiers check. Easiest way to handle this is to have them bring you cash. They can't swindle you with cash unless it is counterfeit. Don't every turn loose title unless you have cash money. If they want to give you check take it to their bank with them and cash it, never deposit it. Then you can turn over title to them. I am beginning to believe there are more crooks than honest people out there.

What?? Most people using a check cashing place don’t even have a bank account. Why else would they pay a fee to get a check cashed?

Lot of assumptions flying out there, l was hoping to find someone that has been in this exact situation before. Most of their scams are just common sense that prey on the gullible. I’ll research the routing number, cross check payer address, check the watermarks and then possibly take it to a bank to let them check it out, it’s probably going to the authorities after that.

Not exactly the same...I put a 5th wheel hitch up for sale on Craigs list a couple of years ago, for $300, received an email offering me $75. Nope $300. No counter, he said ok & will send me a check, would have someone pick it up. Didn't ask anything about condition etc. Nope. Cash meet up in a parking lot between our locations. Never heard from him again

Oh yeah, it's still in my shed, if anyone wants to buy it.
