Yes the propane detectors actually detects propane, butane, methane, etc. so cleaning supplies or flatulence can set it off. They also have expiration dates so if it was 19 you actually got a bonus year.

Same problem with ours. Replaced with one from Ebay and the new one works fine. Lots of complains about these units.

The best thing I did was throw it away and buy a first alert battery only model.

They sometimes just go bad and have to be replaced before their time is up, 5 to 7 years. Happened to me on my first camper but it was several years old. They only have a life of 5 to 7 years and need to be replace. If you believe in PM(preventive maintenance) change them out ever 4 years. They have date manufactured on them.

Just a note, they have a life of 10 years. They will do that at end of life, but yours seems to not be that old.

My last one expired at 10 years to the day! My mother-in-law had one in her home, same thing expired at exactly 10 years!

If your wife has the dog, yes, they CAN set off the detector. Our first Bassett did that at 2 AM on one our trips out with our first camper. Loads of "fun" trying to silence the thing.

It sounds like yours may have decided to retire early.
