I have a Yamaha 2400 inverter. It will run a 13.5k air conditioner providing nothing else is running when it starts up. It's reasonably quiet and the weight is manageable.

I always find threads like this interesting. Something to ponder...

If somebody lined up all the generators mentioned in this thread and said you can have any one (or two) you want for free, which would you take? I'm pretty sure I can guess which generator 90% of the folks would grab :-)

Dang you Brian. That made me think. But then again, that silly thing called a budget crept into the equation.

Yeah, when you add budget (which I have to do now that I'm retired), it REALLY does make these decisions more difficult- or actually sometimes easier! I bought two new generators last year when we were still working. Easy decision then. If I was buying them now that I'm retired, they might be a different brand :-)

Bertschb, true....if your not paying for it. Budget has to factor in someplace. I personally can not afford the best of everything. Best house, best car, best boat, best camper, etc......I have the above mentioned items, are they all the best made...no!

Thanks for the advice and info everyone! I think I'll be going with the Champion Inverter (for cost).
I don't use a lot of utilities out here in CA but where I'm at, I will definitely be needing an AC...if not for me, my dog!

Well the neat thing about the Yamaha 2400 is that you can parallel them. I can tell you the 2400 has a tough time run 13.5 KBTU HVAC around 6,000 feet. If you keep the HVAC running it can still do OK.

A pair of 2400s would do quite well. The problem is the 2400 has gravity carb which makes it very difficult to add a boat tank. You have to plug the fuel vent or add a controllable fuel vent, and keep the boat tank level with the fuel tank.

One outfit made a fuel pump power off the 12 volt circuit. The problem I saw with that is overfilling the Yammy fuel fuel tank.

Has anyone seen Harbor Freight's recent advertising that their generators are just as good as Honda? Figured this was worth a read.

I would not be a believer. Use to sell tools and know you don't buy HF for quality. They service to a price point. However my vote would go to Champion, common threads state several things, how well they run, cost, economy, and more importantly the great custom service from Champion. Costco has them on sale every now and again. I'll be hitting the buy it now button next sale.

I would be reluctant to buy a Harbor Freight inverter generator. There are several other manufacturers of inverter style gensets for just a few hundred more. There ars Champions, Generacs, and one other $500- $700 range and have better reputations.
