Wichita kansas to south padre island Texas

Traveling thanksgiving day from wichita kansas to south padre. Planning on using interstate highway most of the way but was wondering of alternate routes to get around the traffic in the metro areas.

There really is not a short alternativeto I35 to get around Dallas/Fort Worth. Based on my recent trip there is less construction congestion taking I35E through Dallas. Austin can be a really congested trip on I 35 but there is the toll road 130 around Austin at least to Buda, Tx. Although it is not all expressway you might look at taking US 77 out of Waco all the way down. There a few towns , but you skirt many of them and the road was in good shape out of Waco to Rockdale when I drove it a couple of years ago. I have driven 77 down from Rockdale in the last 3 months and it is a good route to pull a trailer (unless the highway dept. starts some new project). I like taking 77 instead of the expressway for stops so I don't have to navigate some on/off ramps in the heavy traffic in the Austin to San Antonio corridor.

If you could travel through DFW on a Sunday morning you would save yourself a lot of head aches. Personally I would travel down 281 west of I-35 but I like small towns and am not in a hurry. The DFW metroplex has over 7 million people in it, the 4th largest in the US.

You will save time by leaving I-35 and getting on US 77. It often takes 2 or 3 hours to get from Dallas to Austin

US281 out of Wichita Falls is not a bad route. You can take it all the way to the valley if you want. There is a low bridge (13'-11") on the south side of Mineral Wells, but that's about it. I-44 out of Oklahoma City will get you over to Wichita Falls. The total distance to So. Padre is almost the same as I-35.
