    A TPMS Save!

On the way home from our Memorial Day weekend of fun, TPMS alarmed, left rear had dropped below the low alarm set-point of 72 psi. By the time I was off the road, tire changed with spare, TPMS was showing 47 psi. Nothing visible in tread, will take it to my local Discount Tire today and determine if safe to patch / repair. From my motorcycle days where we would toss a tire before risking a repair ... conundrum will be what to do with the tire. Repair (if possible) and swap with "new" tread of spare tire?

Maybe a year and a half since tire was manufactured, approximately 5,300 miles on the Westlakes (including estimate of travel distance from Indiana to Texas). Good tread left, even wear across all 4 tires. Hate to think about tossing usable tires ... but hate to think about the collateral damage if one lets loose!

Thankful for the TPMS and having such a 1st world problem to deal with!

I'm by far no tire expert but my vote is to toss it. Something about a repaired Westlake scares me. We got about 20,000 on ours before we (got lucky) caught the seperation beginning on 1 tire. If you're comfortable with keeping the westlakes then use the spare and replace it with a new one

I also would not pull on a repaired tire, regardless of brand. However, my first and only flat on this rig turned out to be a hairline crack in the rim. Took several attempts to find it.

I had two small brad nails in one of mine right away. Had it patched and replaced with the spare. 2,000 miles later all is good. I do use my tpms every time. I was fortunate when I had that air leak because I had just picked up the trailer and could not use the tpms yet as I needed to add the metal valve stems. Fortunately I heard the air leak in my driveway.

That's why I tout TPMS, it gives you an opportunity to keep bad things from happening.

I also had a TPMS save...the first weekend I installed the TPMS. I picked up road debris in a tire. It allowed me time to get off the interstate to a safe place to change it. The repaired Good Year 17.5" tire now resides as my spare.

To follow up on my original post ... very thin nail in the tread. Plug/path combo. All is well and good there, will likely have the spare tire mounted up on that aluminum rim and the plugged/patched tire places on the steel spare rim.

Aside from that, someone at Discount Tire hit the external TST flow through sensor, or over-tightened it causing a separation between the metal collar that screws onto the valve stem and the plastic body. I found that this morning when the tire was down to 67 psi (not mounted on trailer yet ... thankfully). Back to Discount Tire, confirmed patch was holding, leak coming from TST sensor, without hesitate the manager asked me to send him a receipt for the replacement and he'd reimburse me. Always good service from that crew, even when a mistake is made.

TST 507, flow through external sensors on trailer and internal sensors on truck (Chevy 2013 1-tons didn't come with TPMS). The set-up has worked well for me.

I'm a big fan of the TST 507 system and use it on motorhome and even purchased additional sensors. You can disconnect a sensor from the wheel and the alarm goes off and I had the alarm go off when I set upper pressure reading to low and tire got up to operating temps. My TST 507 if you disconnect from the 5er and drive home it takes about 45 minutes for the last readings to clear. I have always question if what I'm seeing are current readings or from 30 minutes ago. Reason I say that is I had all the sensor come online while hooking up but after pulling out I had one sensor not change as the rest of tires headed up and gained pressure/temps. After about 40 minutes that one sensor went blank and never came back on line till I removed it and change the battery.
