looking for more advice - WD hitch

I am not sure whether to get the 12000 lb equalizer hitch or the 14000 lb one to tow my new 2950RL when it comes in but am leaning to overkill and thinking of the 14000 lb one. Will that be a problem? I figure it is more than what I need for this trailer but if I get a bigger trailer later the hitch will be good. I just don't want to have any problems if it is too stiff or whatever.
    Thanks

Someone on one of the F150 forums stated that if you used springs bars that were too big (way over what was needed) they would not work as well as having one's the correct size. I would call Equalizer and ask them. Please post what they tell you.

Your 2950RL has a gross vehicle weight rating of 8,995 pounds. That is the maximum the trailer should weigh when you have it fully loaded. If you are running about 12% of the weight on the hitch, it puts your hitch weight at approximately 1080 pounds. Personally, I'd go with the 12K# hitch which will already be more than you are rated for. There should be no reason to go with the 14K# hitch in my opinion.

I went to the Equalizer web site and they have a calculator to determine hitch size. When I plunk in 9000lbs for the trailer,1100lbs for the tongue and 500 lbs for cargo in the box it says I need the 14,000 lb hitch. ??

That doesn't make sense. The ratings on the hitch should match the GVWR of the trailer. Bars that are too stiff will have to be backed off on the tensioning and will be too stiff. What does your RV dealer recommend?

I contacted Blue Ox about a hitch for our 2950RL and they recommended the 12k bars. I haven't bought a WD hitch because I have a 1 ton truck. Haven't missed it so far, but we haven't put that many miles on the trailer yet.

I'm surprised they told you that. When I researched Blue Ox, they jump from 1,000# bars to 1,500# bars. I can't find any 1,200# bars (or 12K either).

TucsonJim - Doh! You are correct! I went and looked up the email and they actually recommended the "BXW1500" size for the 2950RL. Sorry about the confusion...!

Rob - Several hitch manufacturers also want you to account for the drop that is caused by the weight in the back of the truck also, especially if it's aft of the axle. And when you think about it, it makes sense. The point of weight distribution bars is to get the truck back to level. If you have 500 pounds in the back of the truck, that will cause sag before you even hook up. A heavier bar will help adjust for some of that weight.
