drive 1000 miles for breaking in 2017 Ford F450 truck?

We just purchased a 2017 Ford F450 Lariat with only 3 miles on it. Dealer said no need to break in the truck and it is ready to pull. I am now seeing on forums where people say to drive 1000 miles first. Search manual and finally found where it said for "safety" to drive it 1000 miles before towing. We have a trip out on Monday and there is no way we can put 1000 miles on the truck before then. Has anyone pulled before the 1000 miles?

My brother-in-law bought his truck and the next day hooked up his fifth wheel. Towed it from Michigan to Alabama. That was 8 years ago, still has the truck and it runs great.

Don't drive like you stole it, take it easy and enjoy your trip.

I did a 100 mile non-towing round trip when I got my 350 just to be sure everything was working OK and have been towing almost 100% of the time ever since.

When I had my engine rebuilt I did a little research on the subject. Pretty mixed response, the diesel engine forums resulted in no break in needed. Non-diesel folks said you always have to break in a new engine. The manual was more concerned about the brakes being properly seated before you attempt to use them for stopping heavy loads. (The only response that made sense to me.)

If it's a diesel I would just go, if it's gas I would just go and take it really really easy.

I don't have a Ford but I did start towing within 500 miles on my new Duramax. The one "technique" I have always believed in with new engines is to vary the speed / rpms for the first 1,000 miles or so. So, my advice would be to tow away but don't set your cruise control and vary the speed for a while and HAVE FUN!

When I had the differential replaced in my car the shop that did the work said to drive at or below 50 mph for 500 miles. So perhaps it's more than just the engine that needs to loosen up a bit.

Motors, trannys, etc. are built to a lot closer tolerances than they were 30-40 yrs. ago. However, the mfg. still suggest long distances for break ins but I believe that's so the new owner has a chance to get used to that vehicle, to minamize their liability.

Broke down in SD last year to Yellowstone and bought a new truck (F350 6.7). Hooked up the 369 the second I bought it and went to yellow and back to Ohio. At 20k now with no issues.

I drove my new F-350 for about 500 miles before towing the first time. There was a significant odor coming from the undercarriage when I pulled off the interstate at the first tow. It smelled like coffee brewing. I initially thought is was the trailer brakes overheating but when I exited the truck the odor was definitely coming from the truck undercarriage, not the trailer. I used my thermal gun to check brakes and they all were in the 130-140 deg range. Not hot enough to cause a smell. I did not temp check the trailer brakes. I used the brakes very lightly. The odor only appeared when stopping at a light after towing.

The next day I towed the trailer 7 miles to the storage facility. I had the same odor after stopping. The odor became less and less each time I towed.

I theorized that is was possibly some exhaust heating up and burning off a preservative possibly causing the odor.

I now have 5000 miles on the odometer. There's been no smell since about 1000 miles on the odometer.
