Getting wrapped around my axle on the math

I have a 2016 Nissan Titan XD SL diesel 4x2. Here are the numbers straight from Nissan:

    Max Towing Capacity (lbs): 12,314
    Max Tongue Weight (lbs): 1,231
    Max Payload (lbs): 2,091
    Max Gross Combined (lbs) 19,450
    GVWR (lbs): 8,800

Doing the math (as I understand it) I start at 19,450, then subtract 8,800. Those are fixed numbers, they cannot change. That gives me 10,650 Max Towing Capacity (without factoring in any payload, such as my weight, DW's weight, dogs in the truck, anything in the truck bed, etc.), correct? So estimating 500 lbs of payload that would leave me with a max dry weight of:

    19,450 - 8,800 - 500 = 10,150 lbs.

This would give me an estimated Max Tongue Weight of 1,015 lbs (10% of 10,150).

Is my arithmetic correct? And more specifically, can I do the 315RLTS (UVW=8,994; Hitch Weight: 1,065; GVWR: 10,995)

    Thanks.

Sort of but no. You were correct on towing capacity but not on tongue weight. Your tongue weight does not go down proportionally. They are estimating 10% tongue weight.

You actually still have more like the 1200lbs given the payload. The issue is what weight the tongue weight puts on the rear axle. 1200lbs on the bumper is more on the rear axle...

This is how I would figure it.

GVWR of 8800 is the max the truck can weigh - the 2091 payload gives an empty weight of 6709.

Gross combined capacity 19,450- truck weight 6709=12,741 for trailer towing. Not sure how I'm off 427 lbs but you should start with actual weight not GVWR.

Isn't the tongue weight proportional to the TT weight? If my TT weighs 10,000 lbs, wouldn't my tongue weight be 1,000 (@ 10%)?

Does the tongue weight add to the payload weight, or is it a separate variable? IOW, does my example of 1,000 lbs tongue weight take 1,000 away from my payload amount of 2,091?

Yes. That is part of your payload. 10% is a recommendation. My 313 has around 1,600 lbs tongue weight making it around 15%. My opinion is these trailers are plenty heavy on the tongue when loaded up.

I put the truck on a CAT scale, and it came in at 7,760 lbs with all tanks (fuel & DEF) full (I forgot I did this when I got the truck. Found the data in an email). So that buys me an additional 1,040 lbs of payload.

So using the actual GVWR value of 7,760 I come up with 11,190 lbs as my Max Dry Weight.

    19,450 - 7,760 - 500 = 11,190

If the 315RTLS has a UVW of 8,994, is it a straight subtraction of the difference to see if I'm +/- (in this case I am 2,196 lbs under my max of 11,190)?

    Dazed and confused....

The trailer weight is well within your max towing capacity rating. However it looks like your rated max payload number is off. I think your are misunderstanding GVWR. GVWR is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and is the maximum the truck can weigh fully loaded including the weight on the truck from the trailer. So in your example you only have 1040 lbs left for people, payload and tongue weight. I would be willing to bet the tongue weight of your 315 will put you over your 8800 GVWR without people or cargo in your truck.

I just took the truck to a CAT scale. With full tanks (fuel & DEF) and me it weighs 7,580 lbs. Crunching the numbers (with expected tongue weight as stated by GD @ 1,065 lbs) I have ~ 145 lbs. Not enough. Gotta come up with Plan B. Thanks for your help and enlightenment everybody.

EDIT: DW reminded me that I've got all my tools, jacks, jack stands, etc. in my truck bed tool box, so I've probably got at least another 150-200 lbs in the truck now that I could take out. That would give me ~ 300-350 lbs of room to spare

The one thing you are forgetting is that the estimated tongue weight listed is an empty trailer.

Fill the LP tanks and add a battery and you just gained 100lbs. Put all your "stuff" in that nice storage area and load the trailer and you will gain several more 100's lbs.
