Poll- How Accurate is Sherline Tongue Weight Scale

I am considering buying a tongue weight scale to remove my lingering doubt of having proper weights for optimum pulling. Amazon.com has several sellers selling what looks to be the same item made by Sherline, (model LM2000). I am curious to hear from others that have used this scale and how accurate it is.

For the price, you can take a lot of trips to the CAT scales. I don't think you would ever need it more than once or twice.

See Specs tab . . . 2% mid range and 3% at scale extremes.

Thanks Rob for the link. I just ordered the LM-1000 scale. Reviews seemed to be all over the place. I imagine that using the scale correctly is crucial to getting accurate results.

It is important to be near the mid-range of the scale to get accurate measurements. So the LM-1000 will be best between 300 and 700 lbs. My understanding is that you can change scale range by just changing the gauge. The hydraulic body of the unit is the same. You also have to be careful not to have any side load which will cause the scale to produce inaccurate readings.

I purchased a 2000# version. It shows my tongue weight at 1225# which was 32# from the Cat scale measurement. It is true that you can buy quite a few Cat scale weights at $11 each. But since hitch weights on a tt are more critical than a fw, I prefer to check each time I load up for a trip.

I agree. I have the 2000lb version. Use it much more with the TT than I did with the boat (which is what I bought it for originally).

You can use any pressure gauge with it, as 1 psi= 1 lb. I ended up buying it with a 3000 lb gauge but then went and bought 1000 psi and 2000 psi gauges as well. As Rob said the main thing is to load it directly in line with the plunger. Unfortunately this is hard to do because your tongue comes down in an arc. I took some measurements on several of my trailers a couple of months ago and I think they were 4-500 lbs off due to a bad gauge from the factory and side loading. With these new gauges I will try again but this time will have to shim under one edge of the scales base so that I get 100% contact between the two.

There are a couple of ways to use the scale. One is under the landing jack. My preferred method is to stack lumber to the correct height and put the scale under the coupler.

I have a high-lift floor jack and the base of the Sherline just fits into the “puck” (name?) of the jack. The puck stays level no matter the height of the jack. I use the “pin” supplied with the Sherline and line it up with the coupler, leaving about an inch clearance. Then lower the coupler into the pin with the tongue jack.
