    Looking for truck tires with a higher weight rating

    For peace of mind, I'm thinking about replacing the 18" factory load range "E" tires on my truck with tires that have a higher weight rating. My current tires are size 265/70R18 and are rated at 3,525lbs. The only tires I've been able to find so far with a higher weight rating are 16", not 18".

    Has anybody heard of an 18" tire in a similar size to what I have that have a higher weight rating?

    Not really sure why but what I have found is it's pretty much based on the volume of air a tire can hold and it's gov regulated which is why you'll find the same numbers regardless of the manufacturer

    If you step up to 285/75/18 or 295/70/18 you can find them rated up to 4080. In the stock size 3525 is the highest you'll find. If you find something different I'm all ears. Ive been looking for the same thing for awhile. Opinions are mixed whether those sizes will fit without a level/lift which I really don't want

    @JKellerJr-
    Which manufacturer/model has a tire rated at 4,080lbs in the 295/70R18 size? It looks like those would be .8" taller than what I currently have which may work.

    @schmo37-
    My truck is already an inch or so too tall so the 35" size wouldn't work for me.

    Just checked their web site. The highest rated Toyo tire close to my tire size that I could find was 3,640lbs. I'm hoping to find something closer to 4,000lbs. Thanks for the suggestion though. I had trailer tires all figured out when I found the Goodyear G614 but truck tires???? Sheesh...

    I looking at the Yokohama geolander GO15. Had them on my last truck for a little white before it was totaled. I'm sure others do too. I've also seen a 295/65/18 rated to 3860. They would be a little shorter.

    OK, I just spent three MORE hours researching tires and I believe you are correct! The Load Index rating went up as tire volume went up. Which begs the question - If the construction of a tire is identical and the only difference is air volume (slight size difference), why is it rated for a higher or lower weight? I'll have to research that now. I found there is no tire in my stock size with a higher weight (Load Index) rating.

    The closest size to my OEM tires that has a 129 (4,079lbs) Load Index rating is a 295/70R18. And in that size I agree the Michelin Defender LTX M/S would probably be my choice. My big problem is my truck is already at least 1" too tall for my 5th wheel. These tires would add another .8" in hight.

    In reading further, it appears that in general higher air volume does allow for higher loads and it's because more air volume allows the tire to run cooler. I think I'm just going to start towing at a slower speed rather then getting tires that are a larger diameter but with a higher load index.

    Thanks for your replies guys. It was really helpful and I learned a lot about tire load carrying capacity.
