Given the high cost of a professional installation, and the relatively low cost of the EMS, I prefer to do the install myself and take my chances with the warranty. You will probably pay as much for a professional install as what the unit costs anyway, and they will only warranty the unit one time.

    http://www.progressiveindustries.net/warranty

This Warranty shall be deemed fulfilled and exhausted upon (1) the provision of a replacement unit or (2) once any problem with the original unit is repaired by a qualified technician.
In looking at the warranty for the Surge Guard products, they do not have a requirement for a professional installation, only properly installed. Their products would be another option, and are much easier to install.

I have the Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X that I use and and install an adjustable cable lock using the attached security ring. As for purchasing an additional extension cord I have done that as well so that I have 55ft of Shore Power cable if necessary. The extension cord was over $400 for a 25ft cable with 50A 125/250V twist lock marine grade connectors and 5 year warranty. I am always looking to be prepared for any situation that I may encounter and keep the honest thieves at bay when I can. I would go the portable route.

Yes, it will work fine and I do it frequently. Plug your 30-50 amp adapter into the power pole. Then your EMS, then your power cord. No problems.

    Paul,

What Jim said. It works fine using a 30 to 50 adapter.

Klenger - I just read the Surge Guard warranty and yes, you can install it yourself, but the warranty is only for one year.
