    Legal Limits Issues

There are a number of states where the Solitude is over the state limits: Colorado for ht max of 13', many states for max width of 8' on non-interstate highways, and need for some type of CDL license if combined RV and towing vehicle GVWR exceeds 26,000 lbs.
Have any of you experience a problem with any of these restrictions?

License requirement are based on your home state. For instance, a special license is require in California for rigs over a certain weight, but if your home state doesn't have any such requirement you can legally drive in California or any other state that has special requirement.

As for max height of 13' and max width of 8' on Colorado non-interstates, where did you see that? That would exclude most 5th wheel and many commercial trucks.

In California for residents the restriction for GVWR on campers is 10K for towable trailer and 15K for 5th wheel where you are required to have a class A license. This does not include the GVWR of the TV.

Good Sam Camping has a table that shows max height, width, trailer length, 2-vehicle combined length, and triple towing allowed?
Colorado is only state having a 13' max. All other states are 13 1/2 or greater.
Arizona, Louisiana, New Hamp., New Jersey are states with max width of 8' except 8 1/2' on "certain federal road systems".

Some restrictions are just stupid and never enforced. For instance, Massachusetts is full of roads that prohibit any vehicle weighing more than 5000lbs to travel on it. If those laws were enforced half the people living on the roads would never be able to get home with their over-the-limit SUVs, miniVans and pickups. Those roads could never legally be plowed in the winter, no one could heat their homes with oil or propane, and no one could ever have their septic system pumped or have most any other service provided to their home.

For many states that require special licensing for rigs over the maximum weight combinations (usually 26,001 lbs. total GVWR or over 10,000 lbs. GVWR trailer pulled by a truck with a GVWR over 10,000 lbs.), it IS NOT a commercial driver's license (CDL), but rather what's often called a Class A Exempt Non-Commercial. Some states, however, do have a CDL requirement. Here's a link to a table with a state-by-state listing of license requirements:

    http://changingears.com/rv-sec-state-rv-license.shtml

The only thing that matters is your legal domicile state where you are licensed. All other states have to honor the license issued by your home state - as long as you have a license in your home state that's the correct one for your rig. If I'm caught driving with a "regular" class C license in a state that doesn't have any special requirements, though, I'm not off the hook for having the wrong license in my home state of Texas (I am required to have - and do - a Class A Exempt license in Texas).

I believe the legal height limit nationwide is 13'6". Lengths can vary by states by not the height. JMHO
