    Surge Protector

I read a couple of threads where people have put surge protectors in their RV's.
Is this something that is necessary?

Yes but you necessarily have to install into your RV, there are portable surge protectors http://www.adventurerv.net/progressi...caAgLxEALw_wcB

They are SO much more than "surge protectors." They are electrical management systems ("EMS") that monitor and protect against not only spikes, but prolonged over- and under-voltage situations, bad ground or neutral, reversed polarity, etc. If any of these things are detected when you first plug in, the EMS won't even bring your rig on-line. Progressive Industries is perhaps the best known and, in the opinion of a number of us on this forum, one of the best. They make both "hard-wired" (permanently installed) and portable (plug in at the pedestal) units in 30 and 50 amp capacities. It can save you from loosing a $3,000 refrigerator, a couple of $1,200 ACs, the TV, etc. Ours has protected us and prevented further damage on a number of occasions over the past two years.

First thing my husband installed in our fifth wheel was a built-in surge protector. He understands that stuff and said we needed it.

Plus it's fun to watch the amp and voltage numbers change as the day goes by [emoji6]

A necessity? No. You can camp and take your chances without one.
Potentially the single best investment you can make? Yes.

Also installed mine before the first outing.
