This is my philosophy (and I have a white/decal cap).

I'm not retired yet (it'll be awhile) and I find it hard to have the time to wash our trailer...

Alas I will be unable to do this. If I were to leave all the bugs that we collect on the black cap it wouldn't take long before we exceeded the gross weight because of the thick bug layer. One of the many burdens I must bear. Teeheehee

Sorry, I don't have any witty responses, just something I've read. Put a few new dryer sheets in a spray bottle and full it with water (I guess regular fabric softener would work as well), and spray it on the bug parts. Let sit for a few minutes. After the liquid has had a chance to soften the bug parts, they come off much easier and completely. I have not tried this myself to see how well it works, just throwing it out there...

As far as bugs go, we used to live in Tampa FL. During lovebug season, you'd need a putty knife to scrape off the bugs...

Reminds me of North Dakota during grass hopper season.

Bugs & especially Lovebugs will dissolve with peroxide. I use a spray bottle of peroxide asap on the bugs. Spray and watch them dissolve then just wipe 'em off. I learned this trick riding motorcycles during Lovebug season.

I too have driven the Florida Turnpike during lovebug season. One of the preventative methods that was going around was to spray the front of your car with Pam. They are about as gooey as they come. They are however, rivaled by Texas Bumble Bees and Oklahoma grass hoppers.

I have found dryer sheets to be highly effective also, although in a slightly different manor. I take a bucket of soapy water, 3 or 4 dryer sheets, a beer, and a water hose up the ladder and spend the next couple of hours doing a shoulder and arm workout. Gets most of the bugs off, doesn't scratch the paint.

Now the peroxide angle is a new one for me. I have heard that paint thinner and acetone do a good job dissolving bugs also, but I am not going to put them on my expensive paint. I'll have to give that some more thought.

Awe, this is why I love this forum above all others. The existential challenge of bug splat removal associated with beer. My nose has been building up some bad karma for two years now, and I asked McClains RV in FW what it would cost to do a quick wash. Apparently, they do not do quick washes, they only do full on, scrub down and wax washes for $20/foot, which would cost around $800 for the rig. I chose not to accept that offer, because karma is important and maybe I'll get some kudos for doing it myself with a toothbrush, and beer, and in the end, i'll save the cash and buy something to upgrade the rig instead. And save all the little bug bits for a grand funeral pyre out in the country. With beer.

Bugs on the cap generally don't bother me, but the Admiral is not happy at all upon arrival at a new campsite until all the bugs are removed. If you are a Capt, you know your first and most important responsibility is keeping the Admiral happy!

I'm about to buy a new 394M and one of the first things Ill do before any trips out will be to ceramic coat the cap. I'd like to do the whole trailer but it costs too much.
The cap is definitely worth it though.

I don't know which products are good yet so I wont post any links but look up ceramic coating cars or rv's. I think they do it on boats now too.
