    Tow Vehicles

Hi, new to the forum. We are considering purchasing a Grand Design 310GK Solitude, GVWR 15,000 lbs with a pin weight of 2,350 lbs. The tow vehicle we plan to use is a new Ford F350 diesel, single rear wheel. It seems the limiting factor is payload, this truck is rated at about 3,800 lbs. Anybody have any comments about this type of tow vehicle combined with the previously mentioned fifth wheel weights? Thanks

We have a 2018 375res. Just weighted it. Brochure said king pin weight of around 2,900# but it weighted in at right at 3,500# and its not loaded yet. This is why we have an F350 dually. Its rated to carry 5,700#.

I think you’ll find the loaded pin weight higher which will put you in DRW territory. On our TH the published pin was 3600 and our actual is 4200

    D&A,

I'm quite sure that pin weight is dry, unloaded pin weight. I would expect your wet, loaded weight to be significantly higher than that.

    Donna and Andy,

3800#s is published payload for a base F350 XL without ANY options.

Every Diesel Lariat F350 Crew Cab SRW that I saw had real world stickers ranging between 3400-3500#s. That’s without a heavy sun roof. Platinum and King Ranch were even less.

A 310GK real world pin weight will exceed 3000 #s ready to camp. I would think a 310GK is in Dually territory.

    Here’s my F350 sticker, 3500#s.

From everything I have read most people run 22 to 24% pin weight. The GVWR on the 310 is 15000#s. If you don't go over that 15000#s you would be right at or a little over on your pin weight.

Just FWIW, nearly all of the F250's and F350's that I've looked at have had the GVWR derated to stay under license, registration or tax limits. In most cases involving a fifth wheel, the important rating is the rear axle. On the Ford.com build & price page you can select from a variety of GVWR packages. As long as you're not a commercial operation and don't have to cross scales, it makes no difference.

If the GVWR is not derated, the front and rear axle weights, less the curb weight will equal the real payload. It is possible to overload the rear axle without exceeding the payload.

Thanks for all the comments folks! Prefer single rear wheel; however, given the weight a dually may be the way to go.

We'd all prefer an SRW! [emoji41]

I pulled a 20,000lb trailer with a SRW about 10,000 miles across the country and over some twisty mountain highways.
The only reason I switched to DRW was to go from gas to diesel. I couldn't find any diesel SRW 1tons.
I've pulled the same trailer on the same routes with the DRW now and I can tell you there is absolutely no difference in the feel of the stability between SRW and DRW (IMO).
That's on tight turns, fast long turns, straight highways at 85mph, up hills, down hills, really high cross winds and rain. The only thing I haven't been through in both is snow and I hope I never have to.

That being said, I drive a Dodge and they handle completely different than Ford or Chevy when towing. I pulled my same trailer with a 1 ton Chevy drw and it was scary. It felt like the truck was going to break in half.
