A tech at a local dealership advised to always add between 60% and 70% to the published dry tongue weight of the trailer to estimate the actual tongue weight of a loaded unit. As noted by others here, that is good advice. If you want a tongue weight of 800# the dry weight would have to be in the 450 to 500 range.

I purchased a haul gauge to help take the guesswork out of the process. I will cross reference the results I recorded with my current trailer with a cat scale. Most that use the device indicate an accuracy +- 100 pounds. That should be sufficient.
