Poll - Reimbursement for Greasy Brakes

For several model years, Grand Design units delivered with Lippert axles suffered from leaking grease that contaminated the brakes. These problems are starting to dwindle as Dexter is supplying axles for all new GDRV units. There is still some confusion about who reimburses the RV owner when this problem is encountered. By answering the poll, it will give other others guidance on who to contact for possible reimbursement.

If you wish to discuss the technical aspects of this condition, please do so at the following thread:

I allowed for multiple choice answers in the poll. I was reimbursed by GDRV on my first rig, and then Lippert on my second one.

I replaced the original (massively polluted) brakes myself within 4 months of purchase with self adjusting drum brakes purchased from etrailer at my own cost.

6 months later I replaced those with a disc brake setup myself.

I wish I had known how crazy inexpensive and easy to install disc brakes were before I did my first job.

My contaminated drum brakes were replaced by the dealer the day of delivery. I insisted the hubs be pulled and inspected at PDI and found leaking seals.

4 months later I had disc brakes installed on my dime for $2,000. BIG DIFFERENCE!

I contacted Lippert directly about my leaking grease seals, since my dealer is 200 miles away. Lippert agreed to an inspection by an independent dealer/shop. I took pictures, and sent that to Lippert along with the mechanics report. Lippert shipped 4 new brake assemblies and grease seals to the shop. I sent Lippert the receipts, and they promptly sent me reimbursement.

About 9 months into our ownership I decided to service bearings. The shoes were covered with grease, as well as the drums. we are talking about April 2015. I bought seals and a six pack of Brakleen which restored good braking. I requested compensation from GD, who offered to pay for parts. Did not pursue. Two years later, our Reflection was recalled for undersize axles- dealer in Durango, CO installed axle assemblies with complete brake assemblies. Less than a year later brakes basically did not work- totally greased. bought forward self adjusting assemblies from etrailer like Poppy did, about $200.00. We have put at least 50000 miles on our Reflection.

For all I know the Tooth Ferry paid for our inspection and repair at our purchasing dealer. All I know is it stops better now and I didn't pay for parts and labor. I did get pre-authorization from Lippert prior to the service work and told the dealer to contact them for reimbursement for the inspection and any necessary shoes, seals etc needed to make them brakes again.

Lippert provided the parts (brake, backing plates and seals) for all 6 and I did the install. The parts were no charge, but I was not paid any labor. I knew this going in but wanted to do the job myself to be certain it was done correctly. I selected both Lippert paid and I paid above due to them covering parts and me doing the labor.
