Thats crazy that 2-3 cups of DEF would even make a difference to the system, that small amount in a 35 gallon system should have just mixed with the fuel and flushed out. Not a chemist though so I don't know how they would react together. Glad to hear it was covered though!!

    Photographs of the DEF disaster

I went by the shop this afternoon to take pictures and see how things were progressing. The mechanic had the truck body off, all the affected parts removed and was already installing a new fuel pump. These guys are quick. I have lots of pictures for evidence if needed for the insurance claim.

The attached pictures show several views of components that are forming DEF crystals. If you try to circumvent a complete tear down and rebuild, you will experience a failure sometime in the next weeks to months. Some of the failures have been catastrophic and resulted in complete engine failure.

He stated that if any of us ever puts the wrong fluid in the fuel, such as DEF or gasoline, immediately disconnect both battery cables and do not let anyone try to reconnect them until you talk to an experienced person at the dealer.

I'm new to deisel and not sure about all of this. When I bought the tow vehicle the dealer didn't say anything about DEF or a DEF tank. Guess it is back to the internet and do some research. Can't wait for my full membership to kick in so I can see pictures again.

    Cool

Been following this thread with much interest. I'm glad your story will have a happy ending. If I remember right Jim, you're out on the road, right? Where did this happen and what insurance company are you with? I think I may want to change my carrier.

They didn't introduce the use of DEF on the Duramax until the 2011 model year.

We haven't hit the road yet thank goodness. We start in June. Our insurance is with MetLife who has been wonderful about this whole thing.

Well it's over. I just picked up the truck and it's running great. Kudos to Jim Click Ford in Tucson for turning this thing in three days, including dealing with the insurance inspector. Our annual family camping trip next week will not be impacted. The final bill for poisoning my truck was just shy of $11,000! I paid in advance, and I'll be submitting the receipts to the insurance company.

I put a locking fuel cap on the truck tonight so it slows me down if I'm inclined to do it again, and to protect the fuel supply from someone else who could do it accidently or intentionally. I've read of quite a few reports of DEF poisoning during service appointments.

P.S. If I ever do this again, public flogging and humiliation are warranted.
