    50 amp surge protector

    Hi there
We are new RVers, used to just have a small Travel trailer. Our dealer recommended a 50 amp surge protector. We usually dry camp or run of off 2 Yamaha generators.
What is the opinion of the group do you have a surge protector, if so is it installed or portable?
    Thanks so much
    Lots to learn

I use the Progressive Industries Portable 50 AMP Electrical Management System. Pricey, but I wouldn't be without it.

My question about using a portable 50A surge protector is does it work when you only have 30A service and where would you have it...at the pedestal...closer to the camper connection? Some of our favorite spots on have 30A service.

Read up on these and ordered one this morning. Cheap investment!

I put in a Progressive Industries EMS hardwired system. Works great! Not too tough to do, but tight quarters to work in.

    Dave,
Yes. Most surge protectors take the "surge" in "voltage" above the acceptable level and divert it to ground before it ever reaches the electronics in the coach. Doesn't matter if you're on a 30a or 50a circuit.

Like others, I installed a PI hardwired system w/monitor in my 303RLS. I found it easier to install by removing the service panel, working with the wire, mounting the EMS to the floor then reinstalling the service panel. I like the system because it shows how much load is being pulled on each leg of the power system. After having Progressive Industry's EMS system on another 5er for over 10 yrs, I can say they are top notch in customer care, just like GD. After trying to trouble-shoot a problem with a unit making a high pitched whine they had me send it to them for bench testing. Within 10 days of sending it, a new one arrived with an apology for the original unit failing after 4 yrs of constantly being hooked up to shore power. Doesn't get much better than that !

Thanks, I'll have a look at the PI unit. While I'm at it I'll have a look at wiring a transfer switch into the circuit to the entertainment center plugs for an inverter.
