We keep our pet in well-ventilated crate and we never left it in car alone.

WRT Mike & Debbie's original post . . . if you can get a small dog used to travelling in a crate, this would be best. Our 8 lb cat travels in her crate (by her own choice) and as long as she can see her dogs, she travels quietly. The dogs are good travellers too and sleep most of the time.

As mentioned earlier, the sooner that you can get a new pet used to travelling in the truck, the better it will be for all involved. We find that ours are very responsive to the "mood" of the driver. This has taught me to keep my thoughts about the other drivers out there . . . to myself .

Rob, we know that you travel from Florida to Ontario - how often do you stop to let your cat get water or use her litter box? We take our Finnan camping with us and he rides with us in the truck in his carrier, but we don't go more than a couple of hours. We are now planning a trip to Virginia (from Canandaigua, NY area) and are wondering how to deal with Finnan's needs if he is in the truck with us. He likes to sleep on our bed and were considering letting him travel in the bedroom where he could have access to his litter box and water (of course, he would be limited to the bedroom and bathroom by having the doors closed).

    Hi Lorna & Eric,

We travel about 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in the afternoon, stopping in-between for lunch and to exercise the critters. Gracie (the cat) usually likes to walk on a leash with the dogs. The dogs are pretty good at telling time . . . they normally travel quietly, but are not shy about telling me when the three hours is up! If it is a really busy/noisy rest area or raining, we will bring the cat's litter box from the trailer to the truck while we out with the dogs and then put it back before travelling. I would think that most animals would be terrified if left alone in a moving trailer. There was a discussion a while ago on this forum where most agreed that they would not do this.

We have 2 dogs traveling with us almost any where we go. They are very good riders and usually sleep on the back seat of the truck. We stop every couple hours, no more than 3 to stretch, go to the bathroom and get a drink of water.

Our 60# Aussie-Doodle gets the entire back seat to herself. She knows exactly what is happening when she is in the truck and goes to sleep within minutes. We stop about every three hours for humans, dogs and fuel.

I used to worry about her being a 60# projectile in a front end collision and then I bolted a 15,000 lb 5th wheel to the back of my truck and somehow it didn't seem as significant an issue anymore.

We travel with 2 cats, we just fold up the back seats and put the liter box on the floor (3500 Silverado Crew Cab). On a long drive we'll put food and water on the floor as well.. . . . . .

    Joe and Dee,
    Thanks for your reply!
Do you have the cats in a carrier or connected to a seat belt strap? Our Finnan just wouldn't stay sitting in the back seat without being "contained".

We let them have free roam of the truck, probably not the smartest way to go, but one or the other will lay on the center console while the lays in their box in the back. . . . . . we'll cage them to move them to the 337 and back to the truck. . . . . . .

    Hi Eric,

We got a crate with a completely removable door and we bring it into the house. We put Gracie’s bed and toys in it, in the house, with the crate door removed. It has become her preferred “safe place” where she often chooses to sleep. When we put her crate in the truck, she scoots right in there. She doesn’t seem to mind the crate door that we add when in the truck. As long as she can see “her” dogs, she is content in her crate. We tried “free range” in the truck and she could never find another place where she seemed to feel safe.

We travel with Finnan in his carrier, with the seat belt holding it firm to the back seat. The carrier points forward, so he can see us, which keeps him calm. Once in a while, he will sing along with the radio, but usually is quiet. I think that when we stop for a rest, we'll take the carrier to the trailer and let him use his litter box and drink/eat. We'll be traveling south on US 15 (forget what the Interstate number is (I-99 maybe) to Harrisburg and then I-81 to Winchester, Virginia. Although we've traveled 15 many times, it's been years since we traveled with a trailer that way. I know Flying J is at the Carlisle, PA exit, but I don't remember any rest stops on US 15 once we pass the PA Welome Center near Tioga. We will not be pulling in to the Wegmans parking lot in Williamsport with a 5th wheel. (We always stop there if traveling by car.)
