Jeff,
I beams are not designed to handle lateral loads where the design is primarily for supporting vertical loads. This is where a well designed cross member comes into play to prevent the beam from flexing. Since the camper industry has been moving toward much lighter chassis designs, we see many posts of broken spring hangers and even frame cracking at the hangers. These failures many times come from the bending that results from this lateral motion. The cross braces in these light weight travel trailers are designed primarily to support the floor which provides little strength in preventing lateral motion on the bottom of the beam. This bending can be seen about halfway through the video I posted in this thread where most of this motion is in the center hanger. This makes sense since one end of both springs are mounted to this single hanger on each side. To install the cross brace will help a great deal in preventing the bending on the center hangers and will provide additional stabilization of the axles. There are endless opinions out there where each person needs to make there own decision.
