Adding extension to 50 amp cord?

On our first time out in the 369RL I found the factory cord wasn't long enough. We needed to back about 10' more into our space to get the 5'r and the truck on the pad. Should I buy a longer cord or can I add a short extension? I know I can add the length I need but concerned about a connection laying on the ground. Opinions welcome.

Re: Adding extension to 50 amp cord?

I have a 30' extension cord and have had to use it several times. I have never had any problems with it. I was told not to go any longer than 30 feet but they do sell longer ones.

I've got a 15' that I use, just plug it in and let it lay.. I've never needed any longer extention cord than that.

Re: Adding extension to 50 amp cord?

I have one made up by an electrician that is 100 Ft! I had a 50amp plug put in by power meter outside my house, and I wanted to be able to plug my RV in which sets behind my house a ways. (100ft). It works great.

Re: Adding extension to 50 amp cord?

A 50 foot, 50 amp extension cord usually runs 8 AWG copper line. Using a line loss calculator, the total line loss is 50 watts. This is about the same power draw as a low power incandescent light bulb. This is inconsequential to powering your RV. So use that extension cord with confidence as long as you follow basic electrical safety such as not letting connections get wet, etc.

The location of the power inlet really needs a little "design" work. I understand putting it there saves a few feet of copper but if your first time out you need an extension cord something isn't right. Our 30ft cord is on the way but its not an expense a new owner should have. I have had a few close calls with the old camper but never had a problem. First time with the new camper and I had to buy a cord.
