    Question Wood Stain

My wife was wiping down the wood paneling and wiped some of the stain off. I want to re-stain the area, what stain manufacturer and number is used?

Remind me to not use that stuff.

Manufacturers are often quiet about their proprietary colors on trim, etc. They often use stain companies that custom mix stains to their specifications, and those companies (like Universal) don't sell to the public.

When I'm doing my own woodworking, I stick to big name brands of stain so I can be assured a perfect mix 10-20 years later. And I don't have to buy it in 55 gallon drums.

    Thanks,

    Hi Bret (@Bret and Linda),

Our supplier is checking, and we'll keep you posted on what they find. Or alternatively, you may also want to check with your local paint or hardware store to see if they offer a close match to the ebony color. If so, you may want to stain a small test area first (keeping in mind it could require more than one application of stain to build to a matching color) to see if that repairs the damage.

    Best regards,
    ~ Janice

One trick I always do when staining anything is to apply Minwax Wood Conditioner. It almost smells and acts like alcohol. But what a difference it makes in soaking up the stain.

That Grand Design black color stain should be relatively easy to match.

I'm sure it is, but would require me taking the panel off and taking it to the paint store.

Purecolor Inc. is not a consumer company. It's doubtful you can buy from them direct since they have distributors.

I really believe the paneling is MDF, and it doesn't soak up stain like porous would does.

My suggestion is to go to Home Depot or Lowes and purchase some Ebony stain--Minwax brand. Apply it with a rag and see if it is the correct color. If so, apply the stain, let it dry for a day and apply a clear finish. If not the correct color, take a rag with paint thinner (mineral spirits) and wipe where you applied the stain. The stain will come right off. And you won't be out but $4.

If you had the panel out, Sherwin Williams or any good paint store can custom mix any color stain for you--if you have the same paneling it's going to be applied to.
