    Ad Valorem Tax

Since June is my birth month, I made my annual trip to the County Tax Office this morning to renew the tags on all my vehicles including our Solitude. Last year the Ad Valorem Tax on the Solitude was $586.56. I didn't think much about it since it was new. This morning when the young lady said $665.36, I almost died. I asked why it went up when all other vehicles come down every year and she didn't have a clue. She said it's controlled by the state. I think I need to find a new state!

I could get a very nice camp site for a month for that kind of money. Please tell me not everyone is paying this high of a tax on their campers.

I feel a little silly since I don't even know what a "Ad Valorem Tax" is, but it sounds expensive. I paid $46.75 to renew the tabs on our Solitude a couple of months ago.

Andy, ad valorem is Latin for "according to value". The state of Georgia charges this tax annually on personal property (cars, trucks, motorcycles, campers, trailers).

Thanks, Steve. I never took Latin in school. Sound like it can add up in a hurry if you have lots of toys. Hope you love your 369 as much as we love ours. We're headed out for a few days next weekend. Then it goes to the shop to get the BR slide floor replaced due to some water damage. Looks like we have the same taste in TVs too. I love my Ford.

Hmm...Steve, sounds like your Solitude is going up in value!
We do not have Ad Valorem Taxes in Louisiana. Thank goodness

Yes Andy, we love our Solitude and our Ford, wouldn't change a thing.

Renee, evidently the state of Georgia thinks so!

Personal property taxes (ad valorem) are charged in many, many states, especially on automobiles and boats. And in many places, they're substantially higher taxes than those in Georgia--where the appraised value comes from the NADA book. Everyone knows the NADA rv/boat guide is just a work of fiction prepared by someone that has never camped or been in a boat.

When I lived in Georgia, I never got over paying such taxes. When I lived in Tennessee, we had no personal property taxes on anything, however we had a 7.00% state sales tax plus a county sales tax to make up the difference. Now that I live in Alabama, we have a very low 2% sales tax, but a moderate personal property tax on anything with a license plate.

My travel trailer remains in North Georgia year round, and it's never run on the highway--expired tags. Therefore I'm skirting paying AL personal property taxes. They may get me one day, however. Or, Georgia may get catch me not paying their taxes.

Virginia personal property tax rate depends on municipality. Virginia Beach is 1.50 per hundred based on NADA.

Steve - check your rates, which you should be able to find online. I had a problem with our previous trailer - the city was charging us the car rate.

Like 2hams I live in Virginia and pay personal property tax. I however live in King and Queen county and the tax rate is $3.94 per $100.00 so I pay over twice what they pay. Kind of unfair, but it is the way it is.
