Have you seen the grain free dog food controversy

Just a heads up about the current controversy about feeding your dog a grain free diet. This may lead to heart failure in some breeds. Yesterday Molly's vet recommended to stop feeding grain free and also did a blood test for taurine levels.

Summary: Last week the FDA released findings that a grain free diet may lead to heart failure (death), particularly in certain breeds. This seems to be linked to a taurine deficiency.

Here are links to the FDA release https://www.fda.gov/animalveterinary.../ucm613305.htm

    The Washington Post article https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...=.eca61efac275

    and Whole Dog Journal https://www.whole-dog-journal.com/bl...g-21893-1.html

Studies are underway at Tufts and UC Davis. The taurine blood test is about $300, but the studies will subsidize about half the cost. We will know the results of Molly's test in about 3 weeks.

My wife noticed this issue on a web site about 6 months ago. I dismissed it at the time. The FDA angle give it some credence. We've lost 4 golden retrievers to cancer but fortunately none to heart disease. Because of the CA we've always fed the grain free (AKA expensive) food. Trying to do the right thing but how to know??

Don't lose sight that the focus is on the main protien ingredients being peas or legumes etc, protien not being meat as the cause. We have been feeding grain free for almost 10 years to our Aussie and Shih Tzu . Both dogs are healthy. But the main protien ingredients in any food we have used has been from game meats, beef or fish.

Like our own diets we always try to find food that is real meat protiens as the first 2 ingredient and Non GMO.

Here is another food issue some may not be aware of .

We were feeding Taste of the Wild (always had been a well rated food) for a long time and recently we started to notice a change in our dogs appearence, dull coats and itching more. We started to talk about changing it. Then we read about the lawsuit about metals in the food. That cinched it and we did what I never thought I'd do and did an abrupt change in food, luckily both dogs handled it realwell with no adverse affects.
After plenty of research on foods we decided on Earthborn Holistic Grain Free. It's one of the very few foods that has never had a recall of any kind. And the dogs love it !

When we rescued Koda at 5 mos old he had some evil , wicked gas, after a few food changes and still getting stunk out of the house we went grain free...no more Koda farts !! We'll never go back to grained foods.
