The vent from the tank is the one I was referring to as it should let odor escape there instead of coming back from the toilet when you open the flush, I would think unless you have an exhaust fan turned on it would not let odors come back in the camper. I would make sure the vent pipe does not have any obstructions. The Lance I used to have would not smell even if I had the exhaust fan turned on and it was a super fan right over the toilet.

I checked my roof vent pipe and it's clear (that is if its attached). Someone on here mentioned the vent pipe might be in the tank too far, which is a possibility. I'll have try and check that next week and post here what I've found.

Info from JD @ GD said to make sure the vent pipe is not sealed off on the roof with the cover that goes over it. They have found some units that the pipe was cut about an inch too long and when the cover was installed it would seal it off making it inoperable. Hope this helps.

    Eagle,
Good information and thanks for posting. I just checked mine again, and it has plenty of clearance between the cap and pipe. I plan to fill the tank at 1/3 intervals to see when and if the pipe stops venting properly. If it stops venting, then the pipe is down too far in the tank and causing it not to vent. If it still vents properly, then I have no clue why the smell and toilet burping is happening. <shoulder shrug>

I hope it is not that the pipe is too far in the tank as that will be one SMELLY job to deal with. Is your camper out of warranty? Has this been going on since new?

OK, this isn't going to be much help, but here goes. I filled the black tank to "full" <according to the panel>, vent pipe appeared to be clear. I tried the stool and it burped each time and I could smell it. I then emptied the tank and tried the stool again, and it didn't burp. The smell didn't seam as bad. No vent fans were on. I guess I'll let the dealer try to figure it out when I take it in for some other warranty work.
    Eagle,
To answer your question, it's still under warranty and we've only had it out two times. And, yes, that's not going to be a fun job if they have to drop the tank. <shudder>

Now, the one thing I don't know is, does the kitchen and shower vent to the same vent as the toilet. I assume it does, so that's makes it more difficult to check the vent pipe. I'll leave that to the dealer to figure out.

I believe the shower and the toilet are on the same vent pipe. My unit is not here so I can't look and see.

I think you're right. All tanks probably vent through the same pipe. Short of me putting a hose down the roof vent and seeing if the black tank fills up, I don't know of any other way to check it.
I think I'll check and see at what point the toilet starts burping as the tank fills. That would indicate whether the vent pipe is too far in the tank. I'll post what I find out.

Round II, toilet burping and smell.
On mine, just after the black water panel indicates 2/3 full, the toilet starts burping<or bubbles> when flushed. This continues until the tank is full. Until the tank reaches just over 2/3, the toilet works great. I didn't smell anything until the toilet starts burping during flushing.
To me, this indicates that the vent pipe is installed too far into the black tank. When the vent pipe goes into the fluid of the tank at 2/3 full it will not allow the black tank to vent properly. That is the cause of the toilet burping and the smell.
Please keep in mind this is my opinion only, and this may or may not be the problem others have found.
I hope this helps others out there.

Makes sense to me, I would definitely let the dealer fix this one.
