Please School Me on the Latest Satellite TV Systems
I've searched through and read a few threads, but they're all at least one year or more old.
I've worked in communications all of my adult life, know and understand how it all works, just don't know what the latest technology is as it pertains to satellite TV with RVs. I read about "Tailgater" and "Wally" and "Winegard" and some other things, but in terms of which is "better/faster/cooler", who are the players in the business (is it just DirectTV vs. Dish Network?), what are the "must have" features vs. "nice to have", etc.
Is the technology smart enough to auto-track the satellites, or do I still have to get out a compass and do az/el calculations and point? Thanks.2016 Grand Design Reflection 313RLTS

Great question.
Here’s my set up.
I have Directv as a service provider at home with wireless Genies.
I have three TVs at home and three in our 297RSTS.
I have a 2nd video bridge I bought from eBay that stays in the rig.
When we are gone on long trips I bring the main receiver and two genies
When we get to camp I point the dish, hook up the main receiver to the tv in the living room along with the video bridge. The two genies go on the bedroom and outside tv. No cables to run.
I call directv and change zip codes if necessary to receive locals but mostly just antenna for that.

Pretty much exactly what we do as well except we dont use the wireless genies but the wired. For directv hd you will need a slimline dish. Highly recommend a good adjustable satellite tripod that can easily be plumbed as well as a good digital signal meter (we use satlook lite) with this equipment I can be set up up and pointed in 10min or less.Ryan and Alison

We have Dish with a Wally and a Winegard Pathfiner X2 dish. Set the dish with the connectors pointed mostly north and on a level surface with a clear southern view. It finds the satellites and locks onto them itself. I have not yet been where I called Dish to change ZIP codes but have heard from others it is easy to do.

I have a 337 and I have a cube with direct tv box. The cube is not HD. Can I use those Genies with my cube. I had to run some extra cable so I can watch all TVs with one box. Tv in my living room is really snowy

I have 2 homes and the RV on Dish.
In the RV I have 2 Wally receivers and a Winegard Pathfinder X2. I set the X2 outside and connect the coax to it. In about 5 minutes it has picked up the satellites. I call Dish and activate the Wally’s. Wally receivers cost $7/mo prorated by the day.
When we go from main home to vacation home I take my Hopper 3 DVR and a couple of Joey receivers from main home to vacation home, connect and were good to go. Dish installed a satellite antenna and wired coax to 4 rooms for receivers in the vacation home for free. No need to call to activate when we go from house to house.Jerry & Linda

So the box that I got from direct tv should work with the bridges?

Thanks Jerry. So for the two TVs in the RV, each would have it's own receiver. It appears that the antenna has two F-type coax connectors on it, so you need to run two coax cables for two receivers, correct? Sounds pretty straightforward.

We have a similar setup, but with a hard drive on the Wally that turns it into a DVR. I use the MyDish app on the phone to change locals whenever we move (very easy). The good thing about the Pathway X2 antenna is that is can acquire both the eastern and western arcs for Dish Network so HD locals can be had anywhere in the country. We are full-timers (no home with a residential account), so all this is on a Dish "outdoor" account. $49/month gets us more channels than we can watch plus locals wherever we are. We've been very happy with everything for over three years, now.
