New Mattress & Adjusting the Headboard

Another upgrade today--a new mattress. (That 5" OEM just wasn't cutting it.)

The issue was the headboard was too low for the new, thicker mattress. The mattress would not sit flush against the wall because of the headboard.

I found the headboard is held on the wall by screws hidden by small caps. After unscrewing the headboard from the wall I tucked the upper left and right corners of the headboard between the wall and curtain frame. I then was able to move it high enough to provide enough clearance for the head of the new mattress to sit flush against the wall and make it easy to tuck in sheets, etc. The headboard looks properly centered, too.

The DW is happy, so life is good.

Just thought I'd pass this along...

A residential mattress is one of the best things we did to our 303. Be glad you don't have that pesky little shelf above the bed like our 303. I keep threatening to remove the center and just leave 2 small rounded shelves in the corners.

I forgot to mention that the mattress project has spawned a new one. Now I have to find stronger support arms to hold up the mattress so I can access the storage space. Always something...

I solved that problem by having Gary hold up the mattress while I get or put things away under the bed . If I'm alone I put a stick under there to hold up the bed, just be careful to not hit the stick.
We have the heavy duty arms but haven't installed them yet.

Thanks for posting this - my DW and I have the same trailer and are looking for a residential mattress to replace the OEM cardboard.

    Hi Howard,

There are several threads on increasing the strength of the lift struts on the bed. https://www.mygrandrv.com/fo...521#post187521 I have two on each side per this post. There is a better way . . . by moving the base of the strut out so it supports in the opposite direction. I didn’t think of this, before I created my four strut system . . . which also works.

We put in a residential box springs and mattress in our 303rls and I removed the little shelf. Works great and very comfortable.

Rob didn't you have a hinge failure on yours after putting on the stronger struts.

    Hi Gary,

Yes . . . The second iteration was 150 lb struts on the OE brackets. This bent the base brackets (pictures on the forum somewhere). Then I got shorter brackets and doubled up the struts. A 120 lb and an 80 lb on each side.
