    Honda vs. Champion Generator Noise

I went on a camping trip with my son last week. He has two 2000W Champion inverter generators hooked together with a parallel kit. I have a Honda 3000 inverter generator. We hooked them up and used our air conditioners for a load and then measured the noise output with my noise meter. Measurements were taken at a distance of three feet from the mufflers.

    Champion set up - 85.9dB
    Honda - 84.5dB

His set up has 1000 watts more power, weighs less and cost about $800 less than my Honda. I think I could easily live with the extra 1.5dB of noise for those benefits.

Thanks Jim. Was the difference in noise level detectable to the ear? Also curious how much gasoline would be used to keep an air conditioner running all night?

I couldn't tell a difference with the noise at all. I'm not sure on the gas. We shut them off right after doing the test.

Nice test, Jim! Science trumps anecdotal evidence and all that!
We recently camped next to someone using a Champion 3k gennie and it sounded just like a Honda just puttering along. I was surprised how just quiet it was as most of the Champions I have heard are the job site variety.

I would agree. I purchased my Yamaha inverter before I heard of Champion inverters.

Have you guys noticed just haw much the Champions two 3000 watt models look like the two 3000 watts that Honda makes? if you painted the champions red they are identical!! make me wonder if the champions aren't made by Honda and rebranded for Champion.

The Champions are Chinese made units. I understand the company has a parts network in the U.S., and they have a reputation for being very customer centered and good company to work with.

It's the price that's so advantageous. I've seen the Champion 3100's in the mid $800 range where the Honda and Yamaha comparable units are more like $2,100. Yes they're great units, but many owners don't use'em mega hours where they're worth the price differential.

Been looking at Champion. My concern is fuel capacity and runtime between refueling.
