To all above..... I went through the issue of a Non-Commercial Class C driving test because we have a 379FL with a GVWR of 16,000#. This test fills the gap between 15,000# and above. I had to take a written Class C test and a written Class A test and a driving test. The written actual tests were simple. The driving test, no so easy. I took my first driving test in Lancaster. Failed the driving portion but passed the parking, backing, and associated testing. The tester took me down a whole slue of back streets and put me in what I considered unsafe situations. The reason I failed was, she told me after making a right hand turn, I didn't get back into the right lane fast enough. Discussion..... NONE. I retook the test in Bakersfield and passed. Besides the tester being a pleasant cheerful person she gave her instructions early enough for me to plan. If you want to go to a DMV office that is pleasant and helpful, go to Bakersfield.
Now the reason I went through this hell was what was told to me by a CDL (Commercial Driver's License) Instructor. He is the guy that gives over the road truck drivers, training classes so they can get a CDL license. If you are stopped by the CHP or any law enforcement officer, You may get a ticket up to or over a $1000, He will call a tow company of his choice and have your rig impounded. You cannot get your rig back until someone with a valid drivers license can drive it away. We can only imagine what the tow bill would cost and the storage after impound could be costly. As for insurance... well we know how much repair is. I couldn't afford this so..... I took the test and went through the whole thing. I am legal and breathing better. I have been driving without the proper license or endorsement for more that 10 years. Lucky, I am.
If you fall in the 15,000# or more category, really consider the consequences. It is time and nerves but worth it in the end. I don't know what the laws are in neighboring states but I do know some states are similar in requirements. Good luck and have a happy winter somewhere.John and Jean Brown

My wife isn't thrilled that she's going to have to go through this (I already have Class A commercial license). And it won't be fun teaching her. However, my cousin, his wife, and my friend need to get their licenses as well, so I might as well make a class out of it and try to get everyone scheduled the same day one it comes time.
