Refrigerator travel question
We recently purchased our new 2800BH and have a question concerning the operation of the frig while driving. On our old travel trailer we simply put the switch to battery and the frig continued to run while we drove. We were told that the current frig will not run on battery and we need to switch to propane while driving. Now driving with an open propane tank does not seem like a good idea as I might survive the crash but killed in the propane explosion.
If we are driving 6-8 hours how do you keep the frig running. Or does the new frig actually run off battery when you are driving?
Thanks,
Bill

Hello,
I have run the fridge with the propane on since 1992 when traveling and have never had a problem.

Just don't run with propane open while driving through a tunnel. Otherwise, quite safe.

HI Kevin,
Thanks for the input, just seems a little crazy but sounds like that is the only way to keep it running correct?

HI Kevin,
What are your thoughts about upgrade to 40LBS propane cylinders vs the 20 you get. We were fine with the 20 in our old pop up but thinking this one might suck more gas?

I posted a thread on this forum back in July of 2015. I ran some extensive tests to see how long it would take for the food to reach unsafe temperatures in a hot environment. It was very interesting how fast it took for the food to become questionable. I always run with my refrigerator on propane. In fact, we lost our 337RLS in August due to a fire, and it was interesting that the propane never caught on fire.
Check out the information in my original thread. I'd rather take my chances with the propane versus food poisoning.

Hello,
During fair weather (+45F) you use very little propane. Even in hot temperatures if you are parked out of direct sunshine 7 gallons of propane will last a few weeks. The heater on the other hand can really eat up the batteries (blower) and propane at anything less than 40F. I have never stayed at a place with hookups so I have lots of experience using battery power and propane.
The only time I turn off the propane is when I stop at the gas station for fueling.

I'm with Kevinpo. I've been running with propane on for 20+ years and I learned that from a friend when I got my first RV that always did it for 20+ years prior to that.

Same as others. With our popup it had a 3 way frig so would use the battery. Those are small friges so they can get away with it. That's probably what you are used to. When I moved to my hybrid we lost the battery option so started using the propane to cool it before the trip and while driving. I think in the 4 years of the hybrid I had to fill 2 or 3 tanks. We used it mainly for the frig. In the cooler months we used electric heaters with the propane heat as a back up. Haven't used the Imagine yet and plan to do the same with it.
We have a Costco real close and it's nice that they just charge for how much propane they put in so it's easy to top off now if I want.'12 Ford F150 Lariat Super Crew
