Being from Mich. we have spent a lot of time in the UP. Yes the mosquito's ad flies are bad. The majority of time we spent in the UP was after labor day. After labor day all the bugs disappear. Also kids are back in school so it is easy getting a site anywhere. Right after labor day the weather is still pretty nice, upper 60's to lower 70's for high's and 50's to low 60's at night. Good hiking weather and good for a fire at night.

There are a lot of small state forest campgrounds that are beautiful. Small and no hook-ups back in the woods. One of our favorite is outside of Bruce's crossing, the city is small with nothing to do but you can get gas and some supply's there. It may have three buildings now. Campground I think has 6 sites on a nice river. The Sturgeon gorge is nearby with a switchback trail to get down to the waterfalls. There's also a look out point nearby where you can see for miles and see the river winding away. One time we were there the DNR drove through and asked if anyone else had been there. We told them not for the past week while we were there. There are books for waterfalls in the UP. The one we have has 199. It tells you how good they are where they are and how hard it is to get to them. They also give directions for the trails to get back into the woods to see them. The Hiawatha national forest has a lot of small state forest campgrounds that are really nice.

Near Crystal Falls there is a nice State campground on a large lake called Bewabic State Park. Also in Iron Mountain there is a private campground called Rivers Bend. It is a very friendly family campground. Being from Iron Mountain, we have stayed at both campgrounds and have never had a problem. Prices are very reasonable. In Iron Mountain you can see one of the international ski jumps and at a small just a few miles from Iron mountain there is a Iron Mine tour you can take. Oh yes a third campground in Iron Mountain is located at Lake Antione County Park. Has a great swimming beach and sites are wooded.

UP has many great parks. For dry camping, check out Bay View Campground in Brimley or 12 mile beach near Grand Marais
Fayetteville SP is nice as is Taquamenon Falls SP.

Thanks for the replies!
I think we have it narrowed down a little bit some more help is needed.
Our 1st camp area is going to be Porcupine Mtns.
>What campgrounds near here would you recommend?
>How many days is needed to see the sites in the area?
2nd Area of camp will be near Pictures Rocks.
> What campgrounds would you recommend?
>How many days is needed to see this area sites?
3rd area of camp is going to be near Tahquamenon Falls State park or head straight Down to St. Ignace MI./Mackinac Island.
Should We make a Quick Stop at Tahquamenon Falls or skip and head to St.Ignace area?
For sure we will stay near St.Ignace area
>what campground?
>how many days for here?
Then last stop in the UP will be Kitch-iti-kipi
>where to camp?
>I was thinking just one night of Stay but not sure maybe a full day is needed here then we would stay 2 nights....
From Kitch-iti-Kipi Travel 5hours or so then stay 2 nights ?? somewhere on the way back to the Twin Cities.
>ideas??

>What campgrounds near here would you recommend?
I'd stay right in the Porkies (SP) at either of the campgrounds. We prefer the more rustic side. Presque Isle unit (no facilitties) . The sites are well separated and private. with great views of Lk Superior. The other SP is ele only and sites are a quarter of the size. It's also close to the river which is a very nice easy hike around. If you prefer a FHU spot someone else will have to chime in.
>How many days is needed to see the sites in the area?
It depends on what you like, most things in the Porkies require hiking. Some strenuous. 3 to 7 days to allow for day trips in the area. Reccomend a hike out of the Black River Marina (trail head starts there) on the Black River for some great waterfalls, views you just dont get from the drive up side. Not a hike for the faint at heart..Wear good hiking boots, take water and energy snacks
2nd Area of camp will be near Pictures Rocks.
> What campgrounds would you recommend? We've only stayed in rustic NFS in that area, pre 5th wheel.
>How many days is needed to see this area sites? Good question...we generally spend about 5 days min everywhere so there is time to explore and relaximum
3rd area of camp is going to be near Tahquamenon Falls State park or head straight Down to St. Ignace MI./Mackinac Island. TFalls is definately worth the stop . Be ready to go on about a 212 step staircase to view the falls. round trip will make you sleep good that night. TFalls can be day tripped to from the Mackinac /St Ignace area as well as The Big Spring (Kitch iti kipi can be day tripped). If the water is Flowing Laughing Whitefish falls is also very nice.
Should We make a Quick Stop at Tahquamenon Falls or skip and head to St.Ignace area?
see above
For sure we will stay near St.Ignace area
>what campground?
Brevoort Lake NF CG if you like rustic, with all the day trips you can spend an easy week or so in the whole area. If you like Smoked fish a stop at Gustafsons gas station on US 2 near Brevoort is a must stop at to pick one up.
>how many days for here? look up
Then last stop in the UP will be Kitch-iti-kipi
>where to camp? Not much other than the springs in that area and there is no campground at the site, day trip from St Ignace
>I was thinking just one night of Stay but not sure maybe a full day is needed here then we would stay 2 nights....
