New soon to be owner & also a dealer...
Hey everyone, I wanted to go ahead and introduce myself! My name is Matt and I'll be joining the family next week with either a 350 or 388, still trying to figure out what size garage we want-which is a tough decision! I am also the Ecommerce Manager at General RV, and work out of our corporate location in Wixom, MI.
I see a ton of toy haulers and have done a ton of research on my own, on sites just like this one which made me decided to purchase a GD. I have a couple of large huskys and a 4 month old so my wife and I wanted something our family could grow into, and I think this is a perfect fit.
Anyways I look forward to joining the family, and would be more than happy to help if anyone has any questions from the dealer side of things.
Thanks!
Matt

Welcome Matt! Since you don't have a specific machine to put in the garage I would let Momma pick out the floor plan that suits her best. JMO.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! Looks like we settled on the 388 as of tonight when we looked at both side by side again, so I'll have some pictures up of the new rig and my truck (08 f-250 power stroke srw 4x4) sometime next week. Like MountainFolk said you can always use less, but can't use more if you don't have it!

Matt, it is great to welcome you to our family! You might need to apply the concept of using more to the tow vehicle, like one with two more (rear) wheels! I hope you will be OK with the F250, but scaling the combination will be essential to confirm!

X2 on what Steve said, UVW on the 388 listed as 14,300...with pin weight of 2,800#....towing capacity and payload on an 08 F250 ????? you may not have enough truck.

I'm the proud owner of a 323BHS with a 2K lb. kingpin weight towing with a F250 with air bags and the heaviest suspension available. On 3/4 ton trucks, the weight carrying capability of your truck bed limits what trailer you're going to tow. I've hit my maximum weight that I feel comfortable towing.
And I agree with Steve about a 388 and a F250. They'll easily go 4000 lbs. kingpin weight in the real world after loading all your stuff in it. Go dually or go smaller on the trailer.

The GVWR on the 388 is 18,500. With no "toy" in the back you might be OK on the GVWR but that also means you WILL have a higher pin weight than expected, too much for a 250.

I appreciate all the concerns on this, and of course my family's safety is #1 priority, that being said I already have beefed up the rear suspension to where it exceeds f350 spec, just not DRW of course. I worked with a spring shop on this who installed heavier rated springs, air bags, and I have replaced my tires with a higher load rating than what came on it stock, all while being mindful of the GVWR. I do plan on upgrading the truck to a dually once we end up throwing a toy in the back there.
Pin weight on the 350 and 388 are identical, and actually now thinking about it GD states the 388 is a hair lighter (on average). I noticed another member that has a very similar truck pulls a 350 that mentions he has no issue at all.Last edited by kosmo04; 08-18-2016 at 10:28 PM.
