I would cross in B.C., Peace Arch, Pacific Border Crossing or Sumas. Go well north into the interior of the Province, then go east through northern Alberta south through Calgary and Lethbridge back into the States. Then go east. Saskatchewan is pleasant, so flat you can see your dog run away for three days. Manitoba and Ontario are pretty forgettable. Come back into Quebec and try to speak French. Go out to PEI.

We have done the Northern route around Lake Superior and the southern route of Lake Superior both are spectacular once. After many years I prefer the northern route. When your doing the northern route you are much higher up and the views of the lake are great. The roads in Northern Ontario are great now but the stretch from Thunder Bay south is 4 hours before you hit the next town. When we visit our friends in Paradise Mi we cut across the bottom side of Superior through the National Forest to North Dakota then head north to Winnipeg to visit our daughters and grandchildren. If you crossed at Soo Saint Marie (Sault Saint Marie in Canada) you could go straight across to Sudbury and take the trans Canada down to Ottawa which would be way faster than going all the way down to Port Huron and crossing. This would also have you missing Toronto which is a good thing. The 401 is 32 lanes wide in some areas of Toronto and they all drive like maniacs.

If you do head out to PEI, wear your kidney belt! The stretch between Port Elgin and the Confederate Bridge on 16 can be very rough. We were there over the weekend, the bridge is beautiful. Cost to come back for a single car is $47.75 CAD. Make sure you go see the Sea Caves in St. Martin's, and Hopewell Rocks on the North side of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick.
