    Catastrophic Awning Failure

Heard a loud bang and found that the adjustable arm on the awning failed where the Piston rivots to the both the upper and lower arms. Came out to see the arm twisted horribly and the window cracked.

Did you have high winds? I have seen a lot of this when there are high winds or wind gusts. I always put my awning in when it get windy to avoid this.

Wow, I've never seen anything like that. Did you have the pitch adjusted correctly or was it really windy? I'd contact the awning manufacturer and GD and see what they say about that.

About $700 is best price for for "kit" to replace both arms plus labor to install.

Get the parts ordered. Doesn't appear to be a difficult repair, and there are a number of mobile techs that do such work, especially around Helen and Cleveland, GA.

Looks like it was raining (lots of beaded water on the arms), maybe windy, also.

I've seen that before on a different Rv we owned!

Those cheap aluminium arms are expensive!

When I had my first camper(on 3rd now) this very old guy gave me advice. He said you always bring in your awning during any storm, at night while you are asleep, if you leave your camper for extended period of time and you would never be sorry. Seen several awnings damaged when people left them out at night and unexpected storm came up during night while people were asleep.
I have always followed his advice; carry small trap to cover chairs up with at night where they will be dry in morning.

No wind with only light rain... Strangest thing I've ever had happen this far in any camper.

This can happen when water pools up in the awning. As seen on your photos, it had been raining. If you don't set a pitch and allow the water to drain, it can pool up on the awning. At at 8 pounds per gallon, it won't take much for the damage to be done. If you're lucky, the gas shocks will collapse and allow the water to dump. But there is a lot that go wrong and stop that from happening.

I've seen so many expensive failures on awnings, that we rarely use ours any more. We usually use an EZ up in it's place. If it gets damaged, the loss is about $150.
