    Help with tire replacement

    Good morning,
I have been reading online and forum posts for the last 2 days and I am no closer to figuring out which tire to replace my Westlake E rated tires with. We have a Solitude 374th with Westlake 235/80 16 tires. I don't know that I've ever seen so many opinions on tires before. I thought I was going to go with the Goodyear Endurance tires, but then you read posts saying E rated tires are too small for our RV. Then maybe I'd buy the Maxis 8800, but here come the posts saying dont buy those either. Then the whole debate of LT vs. ST, can the GY G614 LT tires work on a heavy Toy Hauler, yes/no/maybe, then there are the Saliun, but then you get the people who say never buy tires from China. I dont know that I've ever been so confused, beyond the fact I need to replace these E rated tires, if they were G rated I could keep them. Can anyone help me at all? I'd love to hear what other TH owners are running.

    Thanks!

Stick with ST tires. The sidewalls of trailer tires are a different design and construction than LT tires (that'll start some arguments...). The most highly regarded ST tires on the four forums I'm a member of are the Goodyear G614s and the Sailun S637 - both load range Gs (load range is a load bearing rating - not size). We've had the Sailuns on our rig for 22,770 trouble-free miles, now.

Thanks, but I've read on other forums that the G614 is not an ST.

Then you read wrong. The Goodyear G614 is an RST - Radial ST - tire.

Well, in that case, leads me to the next question. I am only seeing the G614 in 235/85 16. Will those fit on a 235/80 16 rim? Again, have found conflicting arguments to that.
Also odd Discount Tire has it listed like this. Possibly leading to some of the confusion.

    GOODYEAR
    G614
    LT235 /85 R16 126 G BSW

Short answer: Yes. The rim is not 235/80 16 - that's the tire size. The rim is a 16" rim in a particular width. The difference between the two tires is that the 235/85 will be 1/2" larger outside diameter (1/4" from spindle to tread) than the 235/80.

As long as you have clearance (which you most likely do), it'll be fine.

As Rob pointed out, both the Goodyear G614 and Sailun S637 are considered excellent tires. You can't go wrong with either one. The Sailun in the 85 series have a much higher load index rating compared to the G614 (4,409 vs 3,748) and are better suited for heavier trailers.

The 235/85R16 tires are about 1" taller than 235/80R16 and would raise your 5th wheel about 1/2" as a result. They will fit fine on your 16" wheels.

My Solitude came with 235/80R16 Westlake G rated tires and I replaced them with 235/85R16 Sailun S637 when we took delivery.

Rob - The Goodyear G614 is actually a type of hybrid. It is an LT based tire designed specifically for towing purposes. In fact, if you look at the tire size, it is LT 235/85R16. In this case, the LT designation is part of the required markings.

And if you compare the Goodyear G614 LT235/85R16 to an actual ST tire of the same size, you'll notice that weight capacity of two equally sized tires is different:

    Goodyear G614 RST LT 235/85R16, LR "G" = 3,750#
    Sailun S637 ST 235/85R16, LR "G" = 4,400#

Same size, but 650# more capacity out of the Sailuns (and other true "ST" tires of the same size and load range).

I've got a 399TH, I have at least 15000 miles on it with the GY G614s. Came with them from the factory, never had an issue with them so far. No complaints here.
