North FL/South GA Campground recommendation?

We were all set to go to Crooked River SP in GA next week, but now 2 people have told me that the noseeums will be unbearable. I'm in North Jax, FL and looking for something 150 or so miles away that we can visit without being completely drained of blood. This will be our first big trip in the new rig, so I don't want to go much further.

Looking for recommendations...

• We prefer a state park environment over an RV resort
• Must have 30A and Water
• If there's a spring or swimming hole, all the better.

We were looking at Skiddaway Island in GA (east of Savannah). It seems nice and has a few sites left. I also considered Stephen Foster Folk Cultural Center State Park (say that 10x, fast...) which we've stayed at before. We're planning on leaving 6/2 and coming back 6/7. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

We camped at Skidaway Island State Park last October and really enjoyed it. We had a pull-through site that was very spacious, level, and had full hook-ups. The site had good shade, and there were big live oak trees draped with Spanish moss all around the park. Our kids enjoyed the playground and especially enjoyed some hiking trails. The park is located near a nice neighborhood, and there is a shopping center with a Publix grocery store nearby so you don't have to worry about loading down the camper with a whole week's worth of food and drinks. I don't remember the park having anyplace to swim but we spent an afternoon at the beach on Tybee Island during our trip.

Whoa, that's a state park? ...Crazy. It's a little further than I wanted to drive since this is just my second trip, but that place is going on the list. Thanks!

Try Cotton Hill near Fort Gaines GA or Georgia Veterans Park near Lake Blackshear and Cordele GA. Cotton Hill is an Army Corp park and Georgia Veterans is a State Park. Both are really nice settings and lots of space with hiking and lake views.

I've been to both Skidaway and Crooked River. While I agree with the noseeum assessment at this time of year, I think you will have the same at Skidaway.

I like both state parks. We were in Crooked River early this month. Down there for the Amelia Island Shrimp festival. Annual pilgrimage for us.

We deal with noseeums by using bug spray that contains Picardin you can buy from Wal-Mart. Just about all North FL or South GA campgrounds will have noseeums. This spray is effective and not as dangerous as ones with Deet. You can spray on clothes/plastic and it will not hurt or dissolve them like Deet. Just don't get into your eyes or rub your eyes after spraying your hands. Buy Wal-Mart's cheaper brand, it works just as good as expensive ones. Have fun! I hate bugs also.

Well, we settled on skidaway and haven't seen any noseeums at all. In fact, they must spray here because we've had very few bugs in general (besides the fire ants).

It's been great. The rain came and finally got the temps out of the hight 90s which I wasn't expecting, too.we leave tomorrow, but this has been a great trip so far.

Good to hear. Last time I was there this time of year, there were biting flies in addition to noseeums.
