    Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

We are looking at a trip to the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana. It’s about 560 miles from our home in Colorado Springs and would be our first road trip with our 295RL. We’ll probably take two days to make the trip each way.

Does anyone have any tips on visiting the battlefield or good RV parks? We’ll probably go after Labor Day.

    Thanks!

We stopped at Little Bighorn last fall as we were passing through, we weren't able to spend much time there since we stopped on a whim when we saw the signs. Big thing if you have dogs, they are not allowed to touch the ground anywhere at the site, not even parking lot. That was the other reason we didn't stay long, it was hot so the wife and I took turns going inside while one stayed in the truck with the a/c on.

We stayed at the KOA in Buffalo, WY which is about 100 miles south of Little Bighorn, but it was a great site, (we used our points to upgrade to Patio Site). If you are into hiking, the Bighorn National Forest is a short drive away with some great views and hiking.

I was there about 5 years ago. I highly recommend taking the bus tour. Our guide was a tribal member and was very good. She gave a good account of the dynamics from both sides. Gives a real sense of distances covered during the running battle where men fell along the way, the Sioux encampment, etc. I wish I'd had more time there and will hopefully return with DW.

There is a KOA in Billings that is somewhat close. We have been to the battlefield 3 or 4 times. If you are a senior buy a golden pass, then it is free. Also you can make trips to the pictograph caves at Billings and Chief Plenty Coups is south of Billings also. And Pompeys Piller is about 30 miles east on I-94.

Stayed at the 7th Ranch RV Park two years ago, which is about 7 miles south of the battlefield. Very nice park and would stay there again. https://www.historicwest.com/#!.

Completely agree with taking the bus tour given by tribal members.

We stayed at the 7th Ranch RV Camp in Garryowen, MT. last year. It is right next to the battlefield. It was a nice campground and we spent a lot of time touring the battlefield.

There are two pretty good RV parks in Hardin or the 7th Ranch. Go to the visitor center and watch the movie before you tour the battlefield (it's free). If you like fishing think about renting a boat and floating down the Big Horn river.
