    Durango to Taos NM

Hello all. We will be spending a week in Durango in August, then moving on for a week in Angel Fire Resort near Taos NM. Anyone familiar with and know of any issues with that route? I have driven from Durango to Pagosa Springs before, but never from there to Taos. We will be taking SR84 from Pagosa to Chama, then SR64 on down into Taos. Any concerns or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

We drove similar route last summer. I'd suggest staying away from downtown Taos. Can be pretty narrow and lots of cars parked on the street. Road from Taos to Angle Fire is even narrower and super curvy. Not for the faint of heart.

On US 64 between Tres Piedras and Tierra Amarilla, there are many short, steep hills with sections of 6% grade and lots of 25 - 35 MPH curves. We just pulled our 337 through downtown Taos (not much choice...) without any issues. You can do it with your diesel and the exhaust brake - just be slow and careful. It's beautiful in that area!

We thought the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad out of Chama was well worth it. History and scenery and adventure all wrapped up in one ball.

Does anyone know if SR17 from Chama to Antonito, then down US285 & 64 into Taos would be faster/easier? The Taos website is recommending that route from Durango.
