    Yellowstone

Hello, we are planning to visit Yellowstone N.P. this September. We hope to have a week-10 days to visit. We will be coming in from the east. Does anyone have recommendations as to where to camp that's reasonably close, that wont break the bank, even if it means entering from the west entrance? Also, recommendations for sights to see?
Thanks & love the info you get in this forum!

We were there a couple of weeks ago, wish now we had waited until the September time for the trip. It was nice but crowded, we gave up on old Faithful. Parking is the pits, people just cursing the lots looking for a spot, got so bad people would just stop in the middle of a lot and wait for someone to leave. Missed the Lamarr valley drive, good for wild life.
We stayed in Cody Wy at Ponderosa RV not bad a little tight, $50 a night with good Sam’s. About 50 miles to east entrance.
If it’s in your path Custer SP in SD is great drive for wild life plus Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, a couple hours to Devil’s Tower.
Every thing is nicer in Niceville.

We stayed in a NF cg that had ele and a water fill station . It is in the Gallatin NF, Pretty sure it was Rainbow Point about 8 miles or so N of W Yellowstone . As far as going into Yellowstone by 8 or 9 in the morning the line to get in would be quite long. What we would do is get up super early (like 5 AM) and go in by about 6. The place would be practically empty, it was really nice. Sun was up so you could see just fine. When we saw old faithful I think there might have been about 10 or 15 people. We parked right up front. When we went in to eat seating was not a problem as there was plenty of empty tables. Driving around was great that early as there were no line up's. We would do this every day and it was great. There was even some nice sightseeing near the campground. Go to the otherside of the river and take the drive along it' there was an interesting little center about the formation of the area how earthquakes had changed the flow of the river and the area.

We were there 10 days and still did not see everything Yellowstone has to offer.

We also were there just a couple weeks ago and we stayed at Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone. It's a large park and very nicely maintained but the mosquitoes were horrendous! No mosquitoes in the Park but as soon as we would return to the CG each afternoon we were covered in the little buggers. Some years ago we stayed in the Yellowstone at Fishing Bridge RV Park. It sure was convenient but they pack the rigs in there so much there's barely room to move. We never even put out a chair. We had no trouble finding parking wherever we went but we were there in the first week of June so the craziness was just starting. I would love to go late September or early October next time. There are a couple major road projects going on and we were stuck twice in hour long waits on the road from Norris to Mammoth on the west side of the upper loop. The only good thing about that was as soon as we got through we came across a bear and her cub running along side the road!

Last time we where there -- we went through Custer State Park and had to stop to let all the mother bison and calves cross the road. Some nut case on a motorcycle pulled around everyone, got far to close to one of the calves and the fool started riving up his engine. Mother cow took offence and went after him. He barely got out of this alive.

Great info! Advice we need.....no problem with us getting up early. We have a 33' Reflection so wanna be sure we can get in to campgrounds. Did you have any issues boon-docking in NFs campgrounds? What time of year were you there? Thanks!

We were there in our Reflection (303) and getting around in the CG is easy the loops are large with no tight turns. Getting back to the CG is a little dusty and the road has potential for washboarding. We didn't consider it boondocking being plugged in with water available nearby. With being gone all day long almost every day making it the whole time was fairly easy as far as the black tank is concerned. Conservation on the running water was the challenge. Quick Navy showers was a must , paper plates/plastic silver and as much grilling and cooking as you can outside so no to little dishwashing . The plus of a place to swim is nice too.
We always pick that type of camping or a state park over a crowded private CG. Another bonus is if you have a senior pass it's only 8 bucks a night!

We were there a couple weeks ago as well! We stayed in the C loop of Rainbow Point. It is a really nice campground, though we didn't get a chance to spend much time around it. It has electrical only, but that was all we needed. We did run into crowds at the park, mostly around old faithful, but the loop roads were no problem at all, and we had a really good time and saw as much as we could in the short time we had. Grizzly RV park allows folks to dump there for $10, so we did that when done at Rainbow Point. From there we went south and stayed at Colter Bay campground. We used our solar and Battleborns with much pleasure as only a few loops there have hookups. Colter might be a good base camp for both parks as it is right between.

As for what to see. Oof that is a big list. It depends on what your desires are. Steaming pools of different colors, geysers, hiking paths with amazing overlooks, waterfalls, cascades, lakes, mountains, etc. I (and many others here) can give more detail if you have particular interests. Either way, you cannot go wrong.
