Florida members, any suggestions on where to live?

Will be moving in the next yr, and want to move to Florida. Looking for a nice but inexpensive area. Would like to have about 5 acres. Any places to look at, or avoid? Thanks in advance. Joe

We are looking at settling down again. We bought a subscription to this and have found it very useful:

I also check out what Kiplinger has to say about taxes for retirees.

Lower cost you'll want to look at the Northern parts of FL, interior. You will see much cooler winters up there vs 100 or 300 miles south but the cost of land and living is lower. Closer to the water means higher price. There isn't much cheap land near the water, much less 5 acre plots of it. So you'll be inland, and likely North of Orlando.

Taxes vary a great deal depending on county. 2% of value down in SE FL and half that up in less populated areas.

We recently bought just over 1 acre, and moved to Ocala, from Pensacola. Ocala is right on I-75, about 2 hours north of Orlando. About 2 hours to Daytona, 1 hour to Gulf coast. Ocala seems to have better planning, better roads, better business access. Acreage shouldn't be hard to find around here. Also, lots of humidity.

I like Ocala too. For inexpensive real estate, I'd be looking to move north of I-10 in the panhandle--north of Ft. Walton/Niceville. It's not on the beach, but it's certainly not bad.

Another good place is west of Pensacola in Lower Alabama--around Foley and area. It's a pretty nice society too. My parents used to go down to Magnolia Springs often. Alabama property taxes is ridiculously low, and sales taxes on cars/rv's/boats is only 2 1/2%. No taxes on pensions or social security, either.

This info from tax-rates dot org: The Alabama state sales tax rate is 4%, and the average AL sales tax after local surtaxes is 8.91%. Alabama is one of the few states that does NOT exempt groceries and food from the state sales tax.

Nice, Inexpensive and about 5 acres? What’s your budget? What are you hobbies? Golf, horses, swimming?

When retiring one would want to be near decent medical facilities.

Ocala is nice, horse country and a decent home on 5 acres would start at $400k and up. You can look at Zillow.com and filter acres, by price etc. here’s a Zillow search, Ocala, 5 acres, 2br. 58 results.
