    Weight Question...

I know everyone hates the questions about weight, but I have one...

Truck is 6.0L gas Silverado 2500HD w/ 3.73 rear end.
    6600# curb weight
    9500# GVWR
    16000# GCWR
    9400# Towing Capacity
    2903# CCC

(Potential) Fifth Wheel Reflection 150 260RD
    7500# UVW
    9495# GVWR
8500# (Random Loaded Weight for the sake of argument)
    1700# Pin Weight

I am picking a random weight of 8500# because I am looking at this particular rig and I realize the UVW is more or less useless.

With the wife and myself and other random stuff in the truck our weight would be about 600#'s total. That's ice chests, blankets, etc.

Is the general consensus that this is too much FW for this truck?

    Thanks in advance,
    Eric

*Moderators, I realized this may be in the wrong forum... I'm guessing it should be in the Tow Vehicle forum. Could you please move this?
    Thanks!

That should tow quite easily on your truck.

Why pick a random 8500 loaded weight? Go with the trailers GVWR, then it's not random, and will represent worse case (unless you overload trailer)

Assuming a worse case of 25% pin weight, you're looking at 2373 lbs pin weight. That's probably high. If you go 23% (which is the unloaded percentage), you're looking at 2183 lbs pin weight. Add to that you're 600lbs and you're at 2783-2973 (worse case). Still within payload (unless you are at max pin weight). Even at max pin weight, you're only slightly above payload, and probbly still within axle weight ratings.

I don't like using random weight's to come up with the estimate, because you have no basis for that. Just go with GVWR and you know you will be at or less that weight.

I think you'll be fine with this combo.

In addition to the 600 pounds you suggest is in the truck, don’t you have to add the weight of the fifth wheel? As I recall many hitches are made to be removed in pieces due to the weight, anywhere between 150 to 200 pounds. That would bring the load on the truck to as much as 800 pounds without the pin weight. Not a showstopper but worth including.

Yes, it's low because of the 3.73 rear end.

Thanks for bringing that up. We decided to go with the Andersen Ultimate Hitch, so I figured that was minimal weight and didn't include it. In hindsight, I should have mentioned that and included it in the weight configuration.

Thanks for the explanation! I used 1000#'s as a number only because that's what we currently carry in our tt. We don't see adding much more than that to any tt or fw that we purchase.

The Turning Point pin boxes that come on the Reflection 150 series are not compatible with the Andersen Ultimate hitches (or the Pull-Rite or Demco hitches of the same or similar design).

    Here's another question...

I have heard people, when talking about GCWR, using only the TV and FW weights when calculating the GCWR and some people add the pin weight as additional weight.

If the pin weight is used, wouldn't that be calculating the pin weight twice? Once for the FW weight and once for the pin weight on the truck?

    Example:

Truck GVWR is 7000 with passengers and cargo
    FW GVWR 7000
    Total=14000

    Example with pin:

Truck GVWR 8400 with passengers and pin
    FW GVWR 7000
    Total=15400

    Which is correct?
