    Furnace Cycling

Have a problem with our furnace cycling when starting up. Blower comes on then burner lights, stays lit for several seconds and quits. This goes on for between five and ten minutes and then the burner finally stays lit. It has been at the dealer for a week and they say it isn't right and are waiting for response from factory. By factory, I don't know whether that meant GD or Attwood. Anyone else had this problem.

Yes! we had similar problem at PDI when we picked up our trailer last November. Except our furnace would not stay on long enough to heat trailer. Your furnace might be going into "over limit" due to over heating for any of the following reasons:
    1) heater hoses too long *** probable cause *** (we had this problem - common problem: heater hose is too long)
    2) broken heater hose * next probable cause * (we had this problem)
    3) blocked or kinked heater hose (we had this problem)
    4) heater hose disconnected from furnace
    5) not enough return air
    6) heat registers are blocked
    7) you closes or blocked off the bedroom heat register (because bedroom was to hot and main floor of trailer too cold)
    8) battery voltage could even be too low; especially if you are not running on shore power
    9) propane gas issue (maybe gas lines blocked, air getting into gas lines, bad regulator, etc)

Ours is at the dealership for repairs right now for the same issue. Atwood is the factory that covers the parts, warranty, etc. Initially we contacted Atwood while on the road. The Atwood tech that looked at it thinks it's a defective electrode but didn't have the part for it so we just used our fireplace which by the way is a fabulous heating device! We thought it was just for looks but NO.... that baby put out some heat. We even used it overnight when temps were in the 20's. Back to the furnace, we're done camping for the season so our dealer will have plenty of time to troubleshoot and repair.

It's very odd,. It only does it when starting a cold furnace. Once it has finished going through this period of cycling, it runs normaly. It's like something in the furnace has to reach a certain temperature before it starts to work properly.

Ours would never go ahead and run so maybe it's a different issue but we didn't continue to let it try to start more than 3 or 4 attempts. And the furnace did work the very first time we briefly tested it.

Got an update from the dealer today. The factory finally got back to them and said they think it might be the exhaust pipe. A new pipe is being ordered but the dealer said it is not uncommon for them to wait over a month to get parts. If it isn't the exhaust, then what? Wait another month or two while they throw another part at it and hope for the best. Would like this fixed before we head south after Christmas.

From my background in furnace work; in a regular high efficiency furnace or water heater there is a flame sensor. If the flame sensor doesn't detect the burner is on, it shuts down the unit as a safety. The furnace may cycle several times before it either stays on or locks out. The flame sensor may be dirty, corroded, broken or improperly set to not detect the burner. I don't know if the Atwood has this feature, but if it was my own it would be something I'd look at. Just my 2 cents, good luck.

The trailer isn't here so I don't know the model number but the Attwood manuals I can find on line point to the flame sensor, circuit board or blocked exhaust. Hard to see how the exhaust on a new furnace could be blocked unless it was damaged on installation or there was a bad batch or exhausts. The odd thing is, if it is the flame sensor it is supposed to lock out after the third try. It doesn't, it just keeps cycling until it finally stays lit. Circuit board maybe?

I always hated trial and error method to repair a furnace. Fortunately for you it's still under warranty, once you get it into the dealership don't pull it out unless you're 100% sure the furnace is going to work 100% of the time. Good luck, let us know what it turned out to be.

Will do. We are headed Down Under for a month. The dealer says they will keep us informed by email.
