What happened to our $30 registrations?
Just got mine for my 1977 Ford F250. It's 42 years old and the fee was $105. Never saw the $30 tabs we voted for either

In NY we pay for the pickup based on the weight the truck will be when loaded.

We pay for trailers based on the weight of the loaded trailer, of course the higher the weight the higher the cost.

Here in CA, we pay for the gross vehicle weight rating. Our dear gov. just raised our registration fees. I now pay $680/yr to legally drive my F450 on public roads, towing or not, loaded or not. If I were to register it without the weight rating, i.e. the way sedans are registered, I'd get pulled over as soon as I haul or tow something a sedan couldn't reasonably be expected to haul or tow. The difference in registration is identified by the letter and numbering sequence on the license plate. I forget whether or not commercial plates include letters as I run a personalized plate.

Per the Ontario Canada law, I registered my tow vehicle for 24,000Lbs, the max combined gross weight allowed with my regular drivers licence. With my 16,000Lb trailer connected to my RAM 3500, I am at my max combined gross weight. My truck plate costs me $655.00 this year. My trailer plate was a one time fee of about $35 in 2013. Between the truck safety, tag, and insurance, its $2,000 a year before I'm even on the road . But I enjoy every minute of it

It depends on the state. In Texas, as said, no. We didn't have to declare anything additional in Georgia, either. When we lived in South Carolina, we had to declare the gross combination weight we intended on towing (which really upped the taxes). It depends on the state where you reside (which you did not include in your original post).

Yeah, here in our wonderful state of CA, (sic) I GET to pay $680 for my 2018 F150. I run a standard commercial plate and just live with it. The only other option is to leave the state to...I need to stop there. Travel Safe.
