    vented battery box question

So despite my best effort, I missed this on the PDI walkthrough of my new trailer. I noticed last night the top half cover of the battery box is fastened to the lower section since the battery does not fit the height of the box. They have it just resting on top of the battery. Is that an issue with venting properly? I'm new to toy haulers and 5vers in general.

Ours was the same way. The top cover was just setting on top. There wasn't any web belt like the travel trailers have. I just put a couple bright yellow colored zip ties on it to hold the top to the bottom.

It appears that this is common practice. I would think it circumvents the intended purpose of the box, however it passes muster for the dealer to check the box that the trailer had a vent installed.

It is my understanding that hydrogen is produced when batteries charge/discharge. I don't know how much. But should hydrogen collect and then meet a spark you have the Hindenburg. Ok, I think the real likely hood of that happening is very low. But that is why batteries are vented to the outside.

As long as the hydrogen gets dispersed I don't think you will have a problem.

Thanks yea that’s what I thought. I’m out dry camping and for some reason my batteries are not staying charged. I am running my generators for a few hours everyday and it’ll show that there topped off but by morning the gauge shows low battery. We are barely using any lighting and the heater hasn’t been running. I have 2 12v batteries and normally have no problem even when using the led lighting or charging phones at night. Does this sound like my batteries are just going bad or do I have a draw somewhere. I keep the batteries out of the trailer on a tender when not in use. Any suggestions

    Thanks

If these are original batteries it is highly likely that they are no longer holding a charge. This can happen from age or utilizing the batteries below 50% repeatedly.

Many have moved to 6V golf cart batteries as they're designed to deep cycle more often and more reliably than most 12V btteries. They will fit in your current battery boxes but you will want to wire them in series.

Thanks. Yes I will look into that. Gonna get home do a load test on the batteries and then go to Costco. I heard they are carry the 6volt size that will fit into the trailer battery box

I was also thinking of getting a zany suitcase style solar charger so I can stop using generators so much. Maybe 180 watts
