    North Idaho Boondocking Spot

    Hello,
Thought I would share a nice free spot to camp in North Idaho. It is located about 40 miles east of Coeur d' Alene. Take the Kingston exit off I 90 head north on the Coeur d" Alene River Road past the Snake Pit (a good and interesting historical eatery) about 5 miles. Turn left and cross the bridge at Little North Fork Rd. (locally it is known as the Bumblebee bridge 209). At the end of the bridge turn right on to the Old River road and proceed 5.9 miles to Steamboat creek road FS400 turn left then go about 3.5-4 miles. The pavement on FS400 runs for 5 miles off the Old River Rd. and there are several camp spots right on Steamboat Creek. This time of year is great as it's mostly deserted. Off road vehicles can be ridden on all the county roads but they may have to be registered in your home state. There are so many 4 wheelers and SXS that it is very unlikely you would be checked. There is also a couple of waterfalls in the area that are worth the visit IMHO. Prichard Tavern is also worth a stop. They have local beer on draft and good food.

    Regards,
    Kevin

The name of the falls are Fern Falls and Shadow Falls. They can be accessed by road just north/past the Devil's Elbow campground on the CDA River Road. For those without and off road-vehicle.

    Hi Ed,
I believe it is administered by the Idaho Panhandle National Forest ranger district. I'm pretty sure it's technically a 14 day limit but I have never run into a ranger yet even at the regular campgrounds in the area. The ISP will cruise through the regular campgrounds on holiday weekends but that's about it. These are the type places I stay at 99.9% of the time. I have a dozen or so of them. They're open year round (depending how tough you are) which is a nice way to beat the crowds. I usually stay out of the woods Dec- through mid March. Snow is too deep for me during that time since I don't own a snow machine.

    Cheers,
    Kevin
