Reflections 28BH Mod advice
Have a 2018 28bh 5er and looking to modify the rear bunk. We have only 1 child and have been toying with the idea off turning the rear bunk into just a bed by removing the top bunk, or modifying it by cutting it out to just make it a shelf.
Just a few questions..
1) is it even possible to remove the upper bunk in one piece?
2) Does that bunk provide support for the back wall of the kitchen?
3) is the bunk a solid piece of laminate wood or is it hollow / trussed?
Any other advice, ideas, input greatly appreciated.2012 Ram 2500 6.7L Cummins

Do a search for "2800BH bunk" and search by title, read the thread titled "2800BH converted to 2800BR (babies/kids room) - removed top bunk". I dont know how similar that model is to yours, but there is good info for what you want to do.

We have a one year old, so removed our top bunk and rebuilt it to make a crib on top and kept the bottom bed for a play area/guest bed. It comes out pretty easy, its not structural to anything. I'll find my post...

I’m the wife referenced here, and we absolutely love the mod. The top bunk doesn’t provide support for the kitchen; like N said, it’s not structural in any way. With the top bunk out (or in our case, cut down to make a crib), the room is way more usable, and the airflow is far better too. The bunkhouse only has one air conditioning vent and it’s on the ceiling, so the bottom gets stuffy.
If you’re comfortable with instagram, I can point you to two instagrammers who modified their 28BHs as well so you can see other pictures. Instagram name weventuretogether has a three or four year old, and they modified their bunkhouse to make a toddler bed + office. (They gave up the garage in back to do it, which we weren’t willing to do, haha.) Also jouppioutdoors had their dealer take out the top bunk before they took delivery, and their son, who is 8 or 9 I think, uses the bottom bunk as his bed. Both have pictures of the mod on their instagram feeds.
I think our mod is similar to what you want to do, except you’d have a shelf instead of a crib bed. N and my dad did all the work on ours, so he can probably answer your questions. My parents have another brand of travel trailer with a bunkhouse, and they removed their top bunk to make a shelf back there as well.
We’d love to see how yours turns out!2018 Reflection 28BH
